My husband Van Romaine and I went to see Jesse Malin’s “Silver Manhattan” last night at Bowery Palace in New York City.

I’ve probably played about ten shows with Jesse Malin over the years. All of them Light of Day Foundation related. I’ve watched Jesse walk across the tops of seats at Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park during a performance, navigating a hundred foot long mic cord. The audience is always singing along and above all, the energy he brings to a stage is some of the most enthusiastic I’ve ever witnessed from a performer.

In 2023, Jesse suffered a spinal stroke. His life changed drastically and he was told it was unlikely he would ever walk again. In January, 2025, I played a show with Jesse for Light Of Day at Count Basie Theater in Red Bank, NJ. He sang part of the show seated but would pull himself to standing from time to time with the aid of his walker and a microphone stand. It was miraculous to watch, but clear that a major commitment to rehabilitation had taken place and Jesse was not going to be squashed by his paraplegic diagnosis.

In “Silver Manhattan” Jesse and his incredible band perform the story of his life-changing spinal stroke. We learn a little about Jesse’s upbringing and we walk through the moments of that fateful day with him where his life changed. We learn about what months in the hospital, following the stroke, did to him. We are given an opportunity to feel real human empathy through words and music and human connection.

It is no doubt traumatic for Jesse to have to relive terrifying moments of the last three years of his life every time he performs this show. But what we are brought to feel as an audience is so important.

Real empathy.

In a world where we try to numb ourselves to the suffering around us, “Silver Manhattan” gives us a safe space to feel and emote and reflect. It’s powerful stuff. It’s important stuff.

In my own reflecting last night, I found myself thinking of my friend Chris McKay. After a car accident left him quadriplegic he organized an annual festival that raised money for spinal cord research. He was a performer and sang with limited breath and all the energy he could muster. He had many struggles but he opened a lot of hearts and minds in sharing his experience.

Do yourself a favour. Take a trip to NYC. Go see “Silver Manhattan”. Rock out and reflect. Feel empathy. Feel hope.
