Colin Valgardson of High River passed away September 14, 2026 at the High River Hospital with his loving family by his side, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Colin was born on June 17, 1956 in Edmonton, Alberta to Phyllis and Douglas Valgardson. He grew up with his siblings Karyle, Chris, and Sandra in various places throughout Alberta and British Columbia. Their family often returned to Taber, Alberta and eventually made it their primary home base, drawn by the strong family ties and sense of community there. Those connections profoundly shaped Colin’s values and instilled in him a deep commitment to his family that remained central throughout his life.

The family moved to High River in 1972, where Colin worked alongside his dad in the autobody shop at Central Motors, learning the trade and driving tow truck. In 1976, Colin went into business with his parents, owning and operating Spitzee Autobody. During this time Colin made a name for himself in both the business and the community, while developing his passion for repairing, painting and restoring vehicles. After the business closed in 1994, Colin went on to work at Triple K Autobody, attended SAIT to complete his Red Seal Journeyman ticket, and was hired on at the City of Calgary’s Fleet Services department where he completed the remainder of his career. It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas Suitor of High River, AB, announces his peaceful passing on Friday, September 18, 2026, at the age of 62 years.

Doug was a deeply loved son, brother, uncle, and friend who brought warmth, kindness, and connection to everyone who knew him.

He is lovingly remembered and survived by his mother, Shirley Suitor; his brother, Norman Dale (Jean) Suitor; his nieces, Chelsea (Kia) Rokui and Nicole (Cameron) Williams; and his adored great-niece, Maeve Williams, and great-nephew, Westley Rokui.

Doug’s love extended to his chosen family, Curtis and Angie Nelson, along with their sons Deklin, Daxtyn, and Deaken Nelson, who held a very special place in his heart. He also leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and a wide circle of dear friends.

Doug was predeceased by his beloved father, Norman David Suitor.

A Celebration of Douglas' Life will be held at the Lyle Reeves Funerals Atrium (High River, AB) on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 2:00 P.M.

Jack Ball, much loved husband, dad, papa, uncle and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2026 in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 86, surrounded by his family. He was predeceased by his parents, Ben and Ila and his sister, Arlene.

Born in High River on March 1, 1940, Jack grew up on the family farm with his older sister Arlene. He spent much of his youth helping on the farm and working with his mother - his Brown Owl - on the badges and tasks that led him to become a Rover Scout and later a Queen's Scout.

Jack was an avid sportsman. He learned to curl at a young age in Brant, played football for Red Deer College and later played baseball for the Vulcan Elks. He went on to compete in many curling bonspiels, including the Massey Ferguson Curlorama, alongside farm teams from across Canada.

Jack leaves behind a legacy of kindness, charm and an unforgettable mischievous spirit. He was the perfect mix of "up to no good" and "up to all good", and those who had the privilege of knowing him cherished every moment spent in his company.

Jack was the foundation of his family. His devotion to his wife and best friend Carol and his commitment to the well-being and success of his children, Corinne (Craig), Jeff (Heather), Brian (Bobbi) and Brad (Kathy) were his ultimate motivation. It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Stephanie Davy Ross, who passed away peacefully on September 20, 2026.

Stephanie leaves behind her beloved husband, Randal, and her daughter, Emma. She is also survived by her parents, George and Nicole Davy; her brothers, Tom (Cathy Trepanier Kennedy) and Nicolas (Christina Elsdon Davy); her stepdaughter, Randi Lee (Patrick Whitten); and her two cherished grandchildren, Ari Evren and Eilah Mai. She also leaves behind her mother-in-law, Linda Ross (the late Craig Ross); brother-in-law, Travis Ross (Vicky Harper); and sister-in-law, Jillian Deshazer (David).

She will also be deeply missed by her many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family, and her incredible circle of friends. Stephanie was fortunate to have many meaningful friendships throughout her life, and she touched the lives of so many people. She will be missed by every single one of them.

Stephanie was born in Montreal and soon after moved to Windsor Ontario, where she spent her early years and began building a wonderful life filled with family, friendships, and memorable experiences. Eventually, she made her way west to Alberta, where she began what would become an incredible career of more than 20 years with WestJet.

Cora Janet van Eden quietly passed away September 14, 2026 at the High River Hospital after a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer. Cora was born in Botwood, Newfoundland. Shortly after graduating from high school, she moved to Ontario and completed the Early Childhood Education diploma program at Mohawk College in Hamilton.

From an early age, Cora has had a special love for children. Her childcare experiences began with caring for her baby sister when only ten years old while her mother was too ill. She frequently babysat children while still living on the ‘Rock’. After graduating from college, she worked in daycare settings in Ontario before moving to Alberta. There, she continued working in daycares, but became more drawn to nurturing the development of children prior to them entering kindergarten.

After several years as a preschool worker and director, she began a co-ownership of a new preschool in Calgary. Her chosen name for the school was A Child First; not because it may have been the childrens’ first school experience, but because she believed that the child comes first. In her mind, the children were her clients; the parents paid the fees! Her preschool business expanded to include three schools in total. Earlier, Cora also taught the babysitter training course to teenagers and began a volunteer babysitter referral service where parents could be be linked with a babysitter safely and appropriate to their needs.

With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Ruth Marion Braaten in the early morning hours following her 97th Birthday at Seasons Retirement Home in High River, AB on September 12, 2026. She was an unforgettably kind, joyful and warm-hearted Wife, Mother, Grandma, Great Grandma (GG), Aunt and Friend and has left us with a lifetime of treasured memories of a long life well lived.

Marion and her twin brother Reuben were born on the family farm outside of Frontier, SK on September 11, 1929 to parents Henry and Olga Thoring joining siblings Walter, Gladys, Fern, Frances, Vernon and Willard followed by younger brother Clifford. Marion attended South Trail School and grew up enjoying sports and many adventures with her siblings and friends. She married the love of her life Norman Braaten on July 7, 1950 and together they welcomed their three children: Grant, Lavonne and Leanne. Norman and Marion spent 64 wonderful years together until Norman's passing in 2014.

Following a move from Frontier, SK to High River, AB in 1969, Marion enjoyed working at the High River IDA Drugstore, Nanton Revelstoke Building Materials Centre and finally for son Grant at his Starline Carpets store in High River until her retirement. Living in both High River and Nanton, she made lifelong friendships and countless memories in both communities.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Sheila Mary McLaggan (née Forrest) in Calgary, Alberta, on August 19, 2026, at the age of 98 years.

She leaves behind her loving children Gavin (Marlene), Mary Anne Atkinson (Wayne) and John (Jane); her grandchildren Ian, Haley (Paul), Colin (Stephanie), Dale, Tori (Sean), Scott (Alejandra) and Kelsey (Cole); nine great-grandchildren; her first cousin Barry Ritson; niece Janet Wetter and nephew Graham Wetter (Silvana Saccomani); and other cherished extended family in Canada and the UK. Her face always brightened at a visit from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose milestones and mischief brought her endless delight. She was never happier than when surrounded by her growing family.

Sheila was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill in 2012, her mother Annie Forrest (née Ritson) and her father Louis Forrest.

Her Life
Sheila was born on July 23, 1928, in Nanton, Alberta, spending summer holidays at Beacon Ranch south of Fort MacLeod. She attended the University of Alberta, earning a BSc in Household Economics. She had a short career as a District Home Economist — then fate introduced her to Bill while they were both travelling from Calgary to Edmonton on an airplane.

Ross Lee Armstrong of High River, Alberta, passed away with his beloved family by his side on August 5, 2026, at Millrise Seniors Village in Calgary, following a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s Plus. He was 88. Ross is survived by Bev, his loving wife of 64 years; their children, Darrel (Dianne), Diane (Harry), and Gail (Dave); grandchildren Keagan, Cailea, Brittany, Liam (Hope), Mitchel, and Cassie; great-grandchildren Soha, Ehaan, and Muniza; and many other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Bazil and Gertrude; his brother David and sister-in-law Jean; and his sister Carol Zatelny and brother-in-law Bill.

Ross grew up on a farm in the Stettler area and attended a one-room country school for several years. Riding his horse to school in both winter and summer brought many adventures. After graduating from Stettler High School in 1956, he worked in the oilfields before enrolling in SAIT’s two-year Automotive Mechanic program, where he made many lifelong friends. He graduated in 1960. One highlight of his life was the summer he spent driving a tour bus in Banff for Brewster Sightseeing Tours, an experience that became the source of many wonderful and funny stories. He then moved back to Stettler, began working at Superior Garage, and met the love of his life, Bev.
