Courage Is Not Knowing You Will Win

Recently, I found myself thinking again about something Harper Lee wrote in To Kill a Mockingbird:

“You know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyway.”

That line makes me think about the journey agricultural drones have taken in Canada over the past several years.

A few years ago, there were far more questions than answers.

Regulations were still evolving. Farmers had questions. Researchers needed data. Regulators needed evidence. There were debates around safety, drift, application quality, and whether this technology could truly bring value to agriculture.

It doesn't take much courage to support something after everyone already agrees with it.

The harder thing is to keep the door open when the answers are still incomplete.

Over the years, we have been fortunate to see agricultural associations, researchers, growers and industry organizations do exactly that.

They never had to say drones were perfect.

They simply believed that if a new technology might bring value to agriculture, it deserved the opportunity to be researched, tested, questioned and openly discussed.

Today, agricultural drones in Canada are entering a very different stage.

But we should remember who was willing to keep that door open when the road was difficult and the outcome was uncertain.

And now, we want to open that door a little wider.

At Niagara Drone Summit 2026, we are bringing together experienced drone operators, agronomists, researchers, growers and industry professionals. We have also invited Transport Canada and PMRA to be part of the broader conversation around regulation, policy and practical application.

We don't want a room where everyone simply says drones are great.

We want to ask:

What actually works? What doesn't?
What do we know — and what do we still need to learn?
Where is the technology today, and where is policy today?

If you support agricultural drones, come.

If you question them, come too.

Bring your experience. Bring your data. Bring your questions.

Different opinions are welcome. Debate is welcome.

Because progress doesn't come from everyone saying “Yes.”

It comes from being willing to keep the door open.

Thank you to everyone who had the courage to do that when it wasn't easy.
