Today is Canada Day! Canada Day can be a time to gather, connect and take part in community activities. It can also be a time to learn more about the land we live on and the shared history of this place.

Learning about Canada also means learning about Turtle Island, the name many Indigenous Peoples use for the land known to non-Indigenous peoples as North America.

Here in Jasper, we live, work and gather in a valley where three rivers meet. This place is Treaty 6 and Treaty 8 territory, and within the Jasper House Métis District.

For generations, this land has been a place of movement and connection — a meeting ground, gathering place, travelling route, home and ancestral burial grounds for many distinct Indigenous communities, including the Dane-zaa, Aseniwuche Winewak, As’inî’wa’chi Ni’yaw, Nêhiyawak, Anishinaabe, Secwépemc and Îyethka Nakoda Wîcastabi, along with Mountain Métis and Métis peoples.

We hope you take part in Canada Day activities, and we encourage you to also take time to learn, reflect and recognize the deep and enduring relationships Indigenous Peoples have with this land — relationships that continue today and have existed since time immemorial.

See the Canada Day schedule of activities and join in today!
