I often get asked if someone needs to be spiritual in order to be a Death doula, or to take our course. The answer is no.
What is more important is that you have an open mind to what other people believe in. To how others live. To what they value. A Death Doula is to walk alongside, and to be curious in? Their clients life and death. Regardless of their own personal beliefs.
One belief system we see on this planet is Agnostic. Agnosticism leaves room for a question many of us carry: what happens after we die? Some people have a clear answer rooted in faith or experience. Others feel that we cannot know for certain.
As a Death Doula, I donāt need someone to settle that question before I can talk about death. I want to know what they believe, what they wonder about, and what brings them comfort, so the care, sacred space, and final breath around them reflects who they are.

Much of the fear surrounding death comes from trying to understand it through the limits of a living mind. We know what it means to be here, inside a body, moving through time in a way that feels familiar. What exists beyond that is harder to grasp because we are trying to understand another state of consciousness while still experiencing this one.
Near-death experiences give us a small window into that mystery. People from different cultures and belief systems have described awareness continuing outside of the body, encounters with loved ones who have died, a profound sense of peace and a feeling of returning somewhere familiar. Some report witnessing events they could not have seen from where their body was. Many return without the fear of death they once carried, and with a deeper understanding that consciousness is not as simple as we have been taught.
We may not be able to see beyond the veil with waking eyes, but that does not mean there is nothing there. There are experiences that do not fit neatly inside our current understanding of life and death, and they deserve to be spoken about with openness and respect.
This is also part of Death Doula work. It is not about claiming to have every answer. It is about being willing to sit beside the questions, listen without judgement and help people explore what death means to them. For those who feel naturally drawn to these conversations, becoming a Death Doula creates space to deepen that understanding and offer it to others when they need it most.

A grieving body feels like a body in danger, even when the person is physically safe. Loss changes the way the nervous system reads the world, which is why ordinary tasks, when grieving, suddenly feel overwhelming and physical symptoms appear without warning.
This is not weakness, and it is not someone failing to cope. The body is working constantly to adjust to an absence that has changed its sense of safety, connection and familiarity. Supporting grief means paying attention to what the body is communicating, not only what the person is able to put into words.

Some people spend their entire lives feeling pulled toward the moments everyone else is afraid to enter. They are the ones who stay when conversations become uncomfortable, who can sit beside grief without trying to fix it, and who understand that nobody should have to face death feeling unseen or alone. If you have always felt that pull, it is not random. It's the call of the life you have been trying to find.
Becoming a Death Doula is more than learning what to do at the end of someoneās life. It is learning how to trust your presence, speak with confidence, support families through the realities of dying, and turn the depth you already carry, into meaningful work. Our course gives you the education and practical understanding to stop wondering whether you are capable and begin knowing that you are.
There will always be a reason to wait before investing in yourself, but the calling does not disappear simply because you keep putting it off. It gets louder. Life creates more moments where you start realizing this. If you can already picture yourself doing this work, serving people in this way, and finally building something that feels connected to who you truly are, this may be the moment you stop standing outside of it.

A common question I get asked is if Death Doula work is a viable income, how much can one make, and if this is something one can work in as a career for their life.
The answer is quite simply, YES!
It's true that the main focus of Death Doula work shouldn't be finances, but it is also true that our time, our resources, our education, and more, all cost money. Most Death Doulas I talk to wish they could do this for free, but in life, in the way we have created this world to work, we need to be able to take care of ourselves, feed ourselves, and pay our bills.
It isn't wrong to consider or wonder if this career path can uphold your life financially, and yes it can! We teach you in our course, not JUST the compassionate, holistic, and practical aspects of caregiving, we also teach you how to create a successful Death Doula business, with clients! We have graduates making anywhere from $35,000 - $100,000+ a year.
We cover marketing, taxes, websites, social media presence, packages, services, setting your fees, payments, and so much more! This is a one stop Death Doula College. You can also take courses to hone in and specialize on various facets of Death Doula Care. We also offer business coaching to help you get set up and have clients heading your way!
Your career starts here and grows here!
Become a Death Doula Today! There are only 7 spots total for 2026! 3 spots in our virtual course beginning October 19th, and 5 spots in our in person course in Ancaster Ontario beginning September 14th!

Working with the dying takes the right kind of heart. It requires a person who can become deeply connected while knowing that time will not offer them more, and who will still choose to step closer instead of protecting themselves through distance, though boundaries are a necessity as well. This work changes you because every person you support leaves something behind within you. Being a Death Doula is not about being untouched by loss. It is about allowing your heart to remain open, even when you know it will hurt, because no one should have to face the end of their life without feeling genuinely held.
