We are the office, clerical, and technical employees of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo who provide valuable public services to our community

People depend on public services; services depend on people to deliver them. Our Local represents approximately 900 office, clerical, and technical employees of the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. Our members serve the public in many ways: we are promoters and protectors of public health; people who deliver social assistance, employment programs, and social housing; land use planners, and many more workers who deliver valued public services. We are proud public servants, and proud members of Canada’s largest union, the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

💧✊ Water is a public service. Let’s keep it that way!

Last night, more than 100 community members joined CUPE 1883 and CUPE 1656 for our Keep Water Public in Waterloo Region Town Hall.

We had a powerful conversation about the future of public water, the threats facing public services, and why workers and communities need to stand together to protect them.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out, our panelists and speakers, and all of the union members and community partners who helped make the event happen.

The fight to protect public services doesn’t stop when the town hall ends. We’ll keep organizing, educating, and standing together to keep water public.

✊ Our water. Our public services. Our community.

Today, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We honour Residential School Survivors, remember the children who never came home, and recognize the ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples.

As a union, we have a responsibility to listen, learn, stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, and continue the work of reconciliation.

🧡 Every Child Matters.

💧 WHO OWNS OUR WATER?

Water is essential to every community. But decisions about who owns, operates and controls our water systems can have lasting consequences for all of us.

Join CUPE 1883 and CUPE 1656 for a community town hall on the future of water in Waterloo Region and Ontario.

📅 Tuesday, September 29
🕕 6:00–8:00 PM
📍 Breithaupt Centre, 350 Margaret Ave, Kitchener

We’ll hear from MPP Catherine Fife, MPP Aislinn Clancy, a CUPE water worker and an academic water expert in a moderated discussion about what’s changing, what the evidence tells us, and what these changes could mean for our communities.

We’ll explore questions around water privatization, Bill 60, Bill 98, affordability, public health and accountability.

This is a conversation about something every one of us depends on.
