Hopefully we get a better winter this year! ❄️
They’re saying around 210 cm of snow fell last winter, but that doesn’t account for all the blowing and drifting snow.
With such a cold and windy winter, we were constantly dealing with snow blowing back into lots and driveways. In the end, it was closer to 300 cm of snow plowed, with more than double our usual salt usage due to multiple ice pellet and freezing rain days, and about 1.7× the normal amount of plowing services.
It created major challenges with salt shortages and finding room to pile snow, even with multiple melt downs throughout the season.
Let’s hope this winter gives everyone a little break! 🤞❄️

🌿 **Sometimes the garden has to wait. 🐝**
We came across quite a few yellow jackets working through this garden, so for now, the weeding and redefining of the garden edges will have to wait.
As much as we'd like to get in there and clean things up, the wasp are busy doing their thing and there's no reason to disturb them while they're hard at work. 🐝🌸
We'll give them some space and come back when it's safe to get the garden back in shape.
Sometimes good garden maintenance means knowing when not to work in the garden.
Deadheading spent blooms helps encourage the plant to put its energy into producing more flowers, keeping the display going longer. 🌸
And as I was working through these Phlox, I caught this little visitor enjoying the blooms too. 🦋
A little maintenance goes a long way, for the garden and the pollinators that visit it.
🍃 Avoid trimming Boxwood after August. Here's why.
As summer comes to an end, it's tempting to give your boxwoods one last trim. However, late-season pruning can do more harm than good.
Trimming after August encourages fresh, tender growth that doesn't have enough time to harden off before the colder weather arrives. That new growth is much more susceptible to frost and winter damage, which can leave your boxwoods with brown tips, dieback, and a less healthy appearance in spring.
If your boxwoods need shaping, it's best to do it before the end of August. After that, it's better to leave them alone and let the plant prepare for winter.
Proper timing is just as important as proper pruning. A little patience now helps keep your boxwoods healthy, dense, and looking their best next season.
