Most condos aren’t designed for how people actually live in them. Picture walking in your own front door straight into an open office. No defined entry. No purposeful storage.
No coat storage. Nowhere for keys. Nothing that told you you’d actually arrived home.
That was 144 Park before we touched it.
The closet that should’ve solved this didn’t - it was down the hall by the kitchen, nowhere near the front door. So we moved it, gave that space to the coffee bar you saw in the last post, and built something better where it actually belonged.
There was no wall, no division, just one open room where an entry should have been. So we added one: an arched wall divider, full custom cabinetry, and a hallway console we custom designed to fit the space, curved detailing, vintage hardware, real storage built in. Now it does the job an entry is supposed to do.
Good design doesn’t just decorate a room. It figures out what a space actually needs to do, then builds for that.

144 Park: this used to be a hall closet
Every condo has one. That awkward little closet off the kitchen nobody quite knows what to do with. We turned it into a moment - custom millwork, bar fridge, open shelving for glassware.
Then we went one further: retractable doors that hide a coffee station when it’s not in use - machine, mugs, its own water line plumbed in just to fill it.
And yes, that’s real Detour Coffee Roasters espresso brewing in the last photo. Nobody staged that, we just really wanted a coffee.
Hall closets everywhere should be a little nervous.

144 Park, part 2: the kitchen
This is a full working kitchen, real counter space, real storage, none of it shrunk down to fit a condo. It’s built the way you’d actually cook, not the way it photographs, but it does photograph well!
Bowls out, boards out, something always simmering.
Part 3 is next.

25 years without him. Johnny, Uncle Johnny, Long Rod Utter (his fishing rod!). He had many names and held many hearts, but to me he was Dad. I’ve lived most of my life without him, but every single one of my core memories is with him in it. There’s no explaining why this year hits different. But the hole he left is big and deep. His time here was far too short, but his spirit and character, his humour and wit, his authenticity and humility impacted so many. I choose this picture every year because I feel like it captures all of his essence. He was one of a kind. The biggest sadness is that my kids will never know him. But I’m doing my damndest to give them a bit of who he is. I’ll be mixing a rye and coke tonight and listening to Duke of Earl.
