All Candidates Debate - District of Kitimat Mayor & Counsel 10/03/2026

Civic engagement is an important part of being connected to the community we live in.
Learning about local government, the people who represent our community, and the issues that affect us is part of understanding how we can participate in civic life.
The All Candidates Forum was an opportunity to hear directly from those seeking to represent Kitimat.
If you are eligible to vote, make an informed choice and make your voice heard. 🗳️ If you were unable to attend or watch the livestream (there was some audio glitches), below is the link to the full recording.

When we talk about residential schools, we are talking about children—children like six-year-old Phyllis Webstad.
Her story is the story behind Orange Shirt Day, and a reminder of how much was taken from Indigenous children.
Please take a few minutes to read and reflect on Phyllis’s story.
Every Child Matters. 🧡

In 1973, Phyllis Webstad, age 6, arrived at residential school in a new orange shirt her grandmother had bought her. To her, the shirt stood for belonging. It was taken away on her first day.

Today, in part, is about what was taken from children.

Literacy Kitimat will be closed tomorrow, September 30, in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

We honour the children who never came home, the Survivors of residential schools, and the families and communities who continue to live with their lasting impact.

We believe literacy is about more than learning to read and write. Stories help us understand one another and the world around us. They can also teach us the truths that were not always included in the history many of us learned.

Reconciliation begins with truth, listening, and a willingness to keep learning. We encourage everyone to take time tomorrow to listen to Indigenous voices, read the work of Indigenous authors, and learn more about the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples.

A great little infographic if you ever wonder which level of government various responsibilities fall under.

We've shared this graphic before, but now that we are heading into back-to-back elections we thought this may be a useful reminder.

We're just over 20 days until the local general election for Mayor and Council but as you may know there will now be a provincial election held on October 24, exactly one week after.

This is a quick summary of the types of responsibility that falls to different levels of government.
