What is a portrait, anyway?

It doesn’t have to mean sitting perfectly still, smiling on command and hoping nobody asks what you’re doing with your hands.

A portrait can be polished, quiet, dramatic, colourful, creative or entirely personality-led. It can celebrate something important—or simply make sure you exist in photographs rather than permanently remaining the person behind the camera.

Our latest blog looks at what portrait photography can be, why you don’t need a special occasion and how direction helps even the most camera-awkward among us relax into the process.

Normal is perfectly fine. It’s just never been our goal.

We create photographs with personality and intention—images made to feel like you, not everyone else.

Not normal. Never ordinary.

We’re not saying photography replaces therapy.

We’re just saying great lighting, professional direction and a photograph that makes you think, “Well, look at me,” can be remarkably good for the soul.

What photos does a model actually need?
The short answer: probably not every outfit you own and sixteen variations of looking over your shoulder.
Model digitals and portfolio photographs have different jobs. Digitals show agencies what you genuinely look like, while portfolio images demonstrate your range, movement and ability to work with a photographer.
Our latest blog explains the essential photographs models should have, when professional digitals are helpful, when they may not be necessary and how to build a portfolio with purpose.
If you are starting out, updating your images or trying to work out what an agency is actually asking for, this guide is a good place to begin.
