Green algae on your glass? Don't panic. And definitely don't reach for a chemical first.

Green film algae is one of the most common things you'll see, especially in a newer or developing reef. Some algae growth is normal.

The first question isn't "what kills it?" It's "why is it growing?" Look at your feeding, your nutrient levels, your light, your flow and your maintenance routine.

If it's mainly on the glass and you're cleaning it regularly, that's completely manageable. A magnet, a cleanup crew, a steady routine — done.

The problem starts when you try to make your aquarium completely sterile. A reef is an ecosystem, not a sterile box.

Understand the cause, then react.

How often do you clean your glass — and does the film come back faster some weeks than others?

Stop treating every algae problem in your reef the same way.

You see algae. Your first reaction: what can I add to kill it? But before you add anything, you need to know what you're looking at.

Green film algae? Often a normal part of a developing reef. Hair algae? Now you look at nutrient balance, feeding, lighting and maintenance. Diatoms in a newer tank? Usually part of maturation. Cyanobacteria aren't algae at all — treat them like algae and you go in the wrong direction. Dinoflagellates are a completely different situation again.

The biggest mistake beginners make is reaching for a product before identifying the problem.

Don't ask "what kills this?" Identify the organism, understand what it's telling you, then decide how to react. In reef keeping, the right diagnosis comes before the treatment.

Which one have you fought the longest — hair algae, cyano, diatoms or dinos?

Want a healthier reef? Stop looking only at what you can see.

Some of the most important life in your aquarium is almost invisible: copepods and phytoplankton.

Copepods feed on organic matter and micro-organisms, they reproduce in your rocks and sand, and they become a natural food source for your fish and other reef inhabitants. Phytoplankton fuels that microscopic food chain from the bottom up.

Together they turn a tank into an ecosystem. Corals get fed at night, mandarins and wrasses graze all day, detritus gets processed instead of piling up.

Don't just build a reef that looks alive. Build a reef that is alive.

Do you seed your tank with pods — or do you count on them showing up by themselves?

Want coralline fast? Don't make this mistake.

You want those beautiful purple rocks quickly, so you start adding coralline boosters, thinking a little more must help.

That's where beginners get it wrong. Coralline algae isn't a product. It's a living organism, and it needs the right environment to grow.

If your tank is still young and your calcium, magnesium, alkalinity and pH aren't balanced yet, adding more product won't make the system mature faster. Worst case, you push your chemistry out of balance and open the door to nuisance algae and other problems.

You can't speed-run biological maturity. Stable parameters, proper lighting, good nutrient control, good flow — then give the tank time to establish itself.

Don't chase purple rocks. Build a healthy ecosystem and let the purple come on its own. In reef keeping, stability comes before beauty.

How long did it take before coralline showed up in your tank — and did you dose anything for it?
