One of our non-negotiables in our Mexico Home is to provide education for each of our survivors. When they are ready, the girls attend school and often have tutors to give them every possible opportunity to catch up to their peers and thrive in their accedemics.

Public education in Mexico is legally free but getting a student ready for the classroom comes with significant startup costs.

Across Mexico, starting the school year averages 12,422 MXN (~$930 CAD) per student in mandatory supplies, fees, and requirements:

💛Uniforms & Footwear (~$367 CAD / 4,895 MXN): Mandated daily uniforms, formal assembly attire, and sports tracksuits with specific shoes.
💛Supplies & Stationery (~$285 CAD / 3,802 MXN): Textbooks, required heavy-duty notebooks, and geometry sets.
💛Maintenance & Registration (~$240 CAD / 3,200 MXN): Mandatory "voluntary" fees used by parent boards to keep school facilities running.
💛Hygiene Supplies (~$28 CAD / 370 MXN): Required communal cleaning products like bleach, sanitizer, and paper towels.

In Alberta, a Human Trafficking Protection Order (HTPO) is a specific court order designed to shield survivors and their families from traffickers. 💬

Key facts about an HTPO:

What It Does: Stops a trafficker from contacting or coming near a survivor, forces the return of personal belongings, and prohibits the creation, possession, or sharing of intimate images/recordings.

Duration: Granted for up to 3 years at a time.

No Notice Needed: Survivors can apply without giving prior notice to the trafficker for immediate safety.

Strict Consequences: Violating an HTPO carries heavy penalties, including up to 2 years in jail and fines up to $50,000.

Understanding HTPOs ensures survivors know there are actionable legal shields available to help them rebuild their lives in safety. 💛
