LPS uses Facebook to share information with the public. This account is not monitored 24/7.
As your Police Service, our mission is to provide a safe community for all – both on and offline. After extensive consideration and consultation with other police services, LPS has closed public commenting on our posts. The volume of comments that violate our terms of use has steadily increased and attempting to moderate content 24/7 presents a significant capacity challenge and liability risks. Comments frequently include statements that contain profanity, are racist, derogatory, misogynistic, defamatory, threatening, abusive, maligning, harassing, misleading, off-topic, inaccurate and in some cases have the potential to compromise investigations. These comments are not constructive or productive and do not align with the values of our organization – respect, courage, professionalism, collaboration and accountability. The environment has become increasingly hostile and LPS has a duty to protect members of the public who engage with our social media channels, the subjects of our posts and our employees. Closing comments on Facebook and other LPS social media platforms will not eliminate the public’s ability to communicate with the Service. We welcome and encourage continued connection with our citizens by phone, in person, direct messaging and by emailing [email protected]

The Lethbridge Police Service welcomed two, new four-legged members and honoured the retirement of a veteran police dog during a special ceremony.
After 20 weeks of comprehensive training, PSD Bobbie and his handler, Cst. Joel Odorski, along with PSD Bak, and his handler Cst. Josh Smith, are ready to hit the street. Both dogs received their badges from Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh Monday afternoon.
Bobbie is a two-year-old Belgian Malinois originally from the Netherlands, and Bak is a two-year-old Belgian Shepherd/Malinois cross from the Czech Republic.
In-house training for police service dogs includes tracking, obedience, agility, building searches, compound/area searches, evidence searches, drug detection, gunfire exposure and criminal apprehension.
All LPS K9 teams work alongside patrols and as part of the Critical Incident Response team, responding to high-risk incidents.
In addition to the graduation, LPS also honoured the short, but successful career of PSD Aron, a six-year-old German Shepherd handled by Cst. Steve Zwartbol. During his five-year career, PSD Aron responded to 421 calls, assisted in 213 arrests and proved wrong 33 people who thought they could hide or outrun him!
In the past few months Aron began slowing down and was ultimately diagnosed with cancer. In retirement he will spend his days as a cherished member of the Zwartbol family, receiving all medical care possible to ensure quality of life.
With the addition of the new dogs, LPS has three K9 teams with plans to begin training a fourth in November.

Lethbridge Police have charged a 34-year-old male following an investigation that culminated in the deployment of the Tactical Team and a three-hour search through south Lethbridge before he was arrested.
On September 25, officers attended a home along Mohawk Road after receiving a report that a male – known to police and wanted on outstanding warrants – had stolen a safe containing a significant amount of cash. The occupants reported the subject was believed to be inside the home and in possession of a fi***rm. Members of the Tactical Team were subsequently deployed. As the investigation progressed, police determined the male had previously left the residence and rented a room at a hotel along the 1000 block of Mayor Magrath Drive South.
The male was later located in the lobby of the Travelodge where he resisted arrest and assaulted a police officer before fleeing on foot. Over the next several hours, he evaded police in a densely populated residential area by hiding in multiple yards and on rooftops. He was eventually located hiding in a tree at the Henderson Lake Golf Course and arrested without further incident. He was found in possession of a large quantity of cash.
In addition to the new charges, the male had previously been identified and charged in a string of retail thefts over the past two weeks and was wanted on outstanding warrants. The investigation into the stolen safe is ongoing.
Alexander Brent Hamilton, 34, is charged with assaulting a peace officer, two counts of resisting a peace officer, trespass at night, two counts of mischief, four counts of failing to comply with a release order and three counts of theft under $5,000.
Following a Judicial Interim Release hearing, Hamilton was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court today.
