HOW DOGS NEGOTIATE Dogs are natural negotiators. When a dog wants something from you they will negotiate how to get it. Since most humans don't understand this process they don't negotiate back. Humans have been conditioned to tell dogs what to do which is needed on some level but I always encourage my dogs natural negotiating process. I will always give a dog a chance to negotiate with me and if I feel like they're confused and don't understand I will then give them direction in guidance. Anytime your dog wants something they will offer behaviors to figure out how to get it. Whatever behavior you choose will be repeated. Example: If your dog barks at you in front of the cabinet that holds the treats and you stand up and get them a treat, they have negotiated barking to move your ass. When you move on demand two things will happen. The first is that you will get more barking to get you to do something, and the second is that you will be more and more disrespected. Since dogs have this natural system it's very easy to over train which means you ALWAYS tell your dog what to do (this shuts down negotiating) or you are too easy and encourage a terrible negotiating system. Owners over train will neuter a dog 's thinking process and owners who are laydowns to negotiation open Pandora's box of unwanted behaviors. How do your dogs negotiate with you 08/07/2024
