When Enbridge and NPL Canada needed a 1.3-meter deep trench for a new gas line in Bobcaygeon, Ontario, they were facing two massive obstacles: the unforgiving, ultra-hard granite of the Canadian Shield, and extreme winter temperatures dipping down to a brutal -26°C (-15°F).

Traditionally, crews rely entirely on excavators and heavy hammers for this. But Canadian Shield granite eats up breaker bits, moves incredibly slow, and skyrockets project costs.
