The skilled trades remain overwhelmingly male-dominated in B.C., but women are making gradual gains. Here’s what the data tells us.

The proportion of women in “trades, transport and equipment operators and related occupations” (as defined by Statistics Canada) is increasing, but slowly, from 5.9% in 1987 to 8.3% in 2022. In B.C., women’s share of trades employment grew slightly faster, from 5.8% to 8.7% over the same period.

Funding is available to help cover the cost of skills training for your workforce. The BC Employer Training Grant supports employers looking to train current or new employees, while the Community Workforce Response Grant helps communities fund short-term occupational training for those who are unemployed or precariously employed.

The Province is expanding skilled trades certification to tower and mobile crane operators to ensure consistent training and certification standards, improve crane safety and strengthen B.C.’s skilled trades workforce.

Beginning Monday, July 6, 2026, people working as tower or mobile crane operators will have one year to register as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC or take the skilled trades certification exam and become a journeyperson before the new requirements take effect on July 5, 2027.
