Last minute car camping in Porteau Cove ☀️🌊🚙🌿

From hunter to hunted 🥲

So lucky to spend a couple of hours watching this barn owl hunting in Delta, BC. It was silent in flight and really beautiful.

Unfortunately, we learned that it was preyed upon by a bald eagle a couple of days later.

Bald eagles are abundant in this area but barn owls are not. Also, the eagle is a daytime hunter and the barn owl is mostly a nocturnal hunter, so when the owl hunts during the day those worlds overlap and conflict can happen. Raptors will sometimes attack other birds of prey they see as competitors, which is an unfortunate but natural part of life in the wild.

Still, feeling grateful to have crossed paths with this one, even if only briefly 🫶
