That car usually looked like a McDonald’s dumpster on wheels, but apparently I still found time to pose.

I’ve always said I’m one of the luckiest people I know, and today on my 56th birthday, I’m feeling it even more.

Lucky for my family, my friends, and the community I love.

Lucky to have been born here, raised here, and grateful that I chose to stay and raise my family here.

There’s no place I’d rather call home.

If you appreciate an eight-hour workday, weekends and days off, safer workplaces, vacation time and many of the protections we now consider normal, thank a union.

I grew up in a family supported by union wages - CUPE Local 703 (mom) and the IWA (dad).

If you’re part of a union, you know the benefits. And if you’re not, chances are many of the working conditions you enjoy today were influenced by generations of workers who organized and fought for better.

To the generations before us who worked, organized and sacrificed for the benefit of all of our families and communities thank you.

This weekend was the Labour Day Classic Hunter Jumper Show at MREC Horse Park.

Ash has been competing in this show for more than 15 years now. Horses and really all animals are just in her DNA!

A huge part of that journey has been Kaitlyn and Empire Equestrian. She has created such an incredible environment for young girls and women learning horsemanship, confidence, sportsmanship and, just as importantly, how to support and respect each other.

To me, this is also such a great example of why small businesses are the heart of our communities. Kaitlyn has built something really special that creates opportunities for our young people.

MREC does the same thing through events like the Labour Day Classic - bringing people into Maple Ridge who eat here, shop here and spend money with local businesses. That is good for our community and good for our local economy.

We’ve been with Kaitlyn for more than 15 years, and I can’t recommend Empire Equestrian highly enough.

So proud of Ash, and so much fun watching the next generation of horse girls coming along 🐴

Such a great night at Our Neck of the Woods!

This weekend we had the absolute joy of celebrating the marriage of one of Matthew’s childhood friends.

This group of young people have been friends since kindergarten, and their parents have been friends right alongside them all these years. The groom’s mom and I were friends in high school, and many of the people in that room represented decades of friendships woven into one very special day.

We’ve watched these kids grow up together, and now three of them are even roommates at university.

This weekend, the village showed up.

Parents bartended, cleaned up, helped with driving and pitched in wherever they were needed — all while celebrating these young people we’ve had the privilege of watching grow into wonderful humans.

The groom spoke about how “it takes a village,” and looking around the beautiful Steelhead Community Hall that evening, I couldn’t think of a more perfect example.

At one point, some of the groomsmen were talking about how much fun it would be if one day their own kids became the third generation of these friendships - love the thought!

There is something incredibly special about friendships that span generations — growing up together, raising children alongside one another, and continuing to show up through every stage of life.

And getting to dance with my son Matthew was definitely a highlight for this proud Momma!

I just bought this sauce from Golden Ears Cheesecrafters, and I had to share the story behind it.

It’s part of the Summerland Sauce Project, started by farmer Thomas Tumbach and Chef Ned Bell, who wanted to do something to support their community after the devastation of the Okanagan wildfires.

Their initial goal: take approximately 1,000 pounds of local produce that might otherwise go to waste and turn it into 500 litres of sauce.

The produce is purchased directly from Okanagan farmers affected by the wildfire, local chefs donate their time and talent, and additional funds raised go to farmers whose crops have burned or can no longer be used to help with immediate farm and crop recovery.

As Ned Bell put it: “Every container means a farmer was paid and a harvest was saved.”

It's an incredible example of community coming together during difficult times and using personal skills and talents to help neighbours, save good food and support local farmers when they need it most.

This morning I joined a group of local seniors for 'Brunch with the Bunch' and an important conversation about elder abuse, awareness and support.

Elder abuse can take many forms, and making sure people know where to turn for help is important.

'Brunch with the Bunch' meets the last Tuesday of each month at Ricky’s in Maple Ridge, from 10:30–11:30 a.m.

'Coffee & Connect' meets the first Thursday of each month at the Home Restaurant, also from 10:30–11:30 a.m.

Both groups are a great way to meet new friends and stay engaged - all seniors are welcome 🤗
