Condo and strata communities need more people ready to manage them. 🏢

The shortage of qualified property managers is being felt in parts of Canada, including Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia.

As condo and strata communities grow and the role of a manager becomes increasingly complex, attracting new people to the profession is an important conversation for the industry.

In Ontario, industry organizations have raised concerns about the shortage of qualified condominium managers.

In Alberta, CCI South Alberta Chapter has established an Alberta Condominium Manager Recruitment Committee focused on increasing awareness of condominium management as a career and growing the pool of licensees.

In British Columbia, the provincial regulator has identified a shortage of licensed professionals within strata property management brokerages.

There is a real career path here for people who enjoy working with communities, solving problems, managing projects, and learning about buildings, governance, finance, and more.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be highlighting some of the education, licensing, and funding pathways available for future condo and strata managers in different provinces.

We encourage our community to take time today to learn from Indigenous voices and resources and consider the role each of us can play in reconciliation.

In a fire emergency, knowing the plan matters just as much as having one. 🔥

For condo and strata communities, fire safety is something boards, strata councils, managers, and residents should understand before an emergency happens.

That means knowing:

• Where evacuation procedures are located
• How residents will be notified during an emergency
• Which exits and stairwells should be used
• Who is responsible for keeping fire safety information current
• How residents who may need additional assistance are accounted for
• When alarms, emergency lighting, and other fire safety systems are inspected
• Where to find guidance from your local fire authority

Every building is different, and fire safety requirements can vary by location. Staying informed and making sure residents know what to do is an important part of community preparedness.

Education is at the heart of the Canadian Condominium Institute (CCI), and safety is another area where knowing the right questions to ask can make a difference.

Within the Canadian Condominium Institute (CCI) community, condo and strata property managers work alongside boards, strata councils, owners, contractors, and professionals to help keep communities organized, informed, and operating day-to-day.

Fire and life-safety requirements are changing in parts of Canada. Is your condo or strata community up to date? 🔥

Here are a few 2026 updates to have on your radar:

Ontario | CCI Ontario Chapters
A new Ontario Fire Code came into effect on January 1, 2026, with changes involving carbon monoxide alarms, fire and life-safety systems, dangerous goods, and fire safety plans. Chapters including Canadian Condominium Institute - Toronto & Area Chapter and CCI-Huronia have been helping educate their communities on what these updates mean.

Saskatchewan | CCI South Saskatchewan Chapter
Henry’s Law requires carbon monoxide alarms in all residential suites, including condominiums, by November 1, 2026, regardless of when the building was constructed or renovated.

Newfoundland & Labrador | CCI-Newfoundland
The 2025 National Fire Code of Canada came into force in Newfoundland and Labrador on July 12, 2026.

Requirements vary across Canada, which makes staying connected to the education and updates in your own region especially important.
