🎬 OSBCU’s Education Worker Wednesday Video Series Continues
This week, meet Stephanie Dezsi, Educational Assistant and Vice-President of CUPE Local 218. Stephanie describes the growing challenges in Ontario schools: overwork, understaffing, rising violence, and custodians stretched so thin that some buildings have only one person on shift. Secretaries are facing aggression from parents, and EAs are supporting more students with fewer resources.
💬 “Violence is a huge concern. Workload, understaffing—the list goes on. It’s developing into something that isn’t sustainable, and it plays a huge factor on students.”
Stephanie also shares her hope for the future: more staffing, safer schools, and proper support for students who need it most.

CUPE 4154 was at the Delta Fair on Saturday, collecting petition signatures and engaging with community members about the importance of protecting publicly funded education.

Members of Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) OECTA - Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association CUPE 5678, CUPE 4154, along with the Brockville Area Labour Council, gathered this weekend in a united show of solidarity. For them, the event was more than a protest against the Ford government’s ongoing cuts and disruptions to vital public services — it was a chance to speak up for the people they serve every day.
Participants saw the gathering as an opportunity to voice their deep concern about the government’s direction and its impact on workers, students, and the broader public. Their message was clear: when public services are weakened, communities pay the price.
The event also became a natural space to collect signatures, share information, and educate others about what’s at stake for OSBCU.

What better place to gather signatures than a Fight Ford Rally! Local 3987 jumped right in—connecting with the community, building solidarity, and bringing the call for publicly funded education straight into the heart of the fight.

Rain or not, St. Jacobs Market District showed up. Locals 2512, 1328, 1196, and the Educational Assistant Association had great conversations and heard so many stories. Community outreach at its best!!

CUPE 1734 had a successful canvassing event, with great conversations and strong turnout. One of the final stops was Minister of Education Paul Calandra’s door — a reminder of why showing up and speaking out matters.

July 22 showed exactly why doorknocking matters. Coldwater welcomed CUPE 3987 and CUPE 1310 with open doors and real community spirit. A fantastic evening!!

Local 4153 had a strong turnout on July 22 as they continued painting the province purple on the Hamilton Mountain, joined by Locals 1317 and 3396. Monique Taylor stopped in to show her support, signed our petition, and took a photo with members. She also shared that she hopes to join us again on August 12.
