Today marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and United Flight 93.

A total of 2,977 people perished that day, including 343 firefighters, 37 Port Authority police officers, 23 members of the New York City Police Department and eight emergency medical personnel.

Two more days until our next paid-on-call firefighter information session takes place.

Mission Fire Rescue will be hiring more paid-on-call (POC) firefighters this year, and applications are now being accepted for a fall class.

POC firefighters serve a vital role in emergency response in our city, attending calls all hours of the day, 24-7. They are notified of a call via a pager and a cellphone application, then respond to the fire hall.

POC firefighting is a demanding position, requiring a significant time investment for initial recruit training, as well as ongoing practices every Tuesday night, plus numerous community volunteer events.

We are hosting an information session Sept. 9 at 1800 hours at station one (33330 Seventh Ave.).

Mission Fire Rescue Services' second Beat the Heat Water Bash at the water park drew hundreds of local kids, parents and firefighters for an epic battle.

When a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire threatens our community, protecting homes and other structures is a critical part of the response.

Our Structural Protection Unit (SPU) trailer is packed with equipment to help firefighters establish structural protection during a wildfire, some of the equipment includes two 2,500-gallon water bladders, Mark-3 pumps, gutter-mount sprinklers, roof-mount sprinklers, and a variety of hoses and fittings

This equipment allows crews to set up water systems around structures, helping create an added layer of protection when wildfire approaches.

Wildfire response takes teamwork, preparation, and the right equipment — and our SPU is an important tool in helping protect our community when it matters most.
But wildfire preparedness starts before the fire arrives.

While our SPU provides firefighters with the tools to help protect structures during a wildfire, homeowners can take steps today to make their properties more resilient. Creating defensible space, keeping roofs and gutters clear, and choosing FireSmart landscaping can help reduce the risk of wildfire reaching your home.

Effective Thursday, September 3, 2026 at noon the fire ban within the City of Mission will be lifted.

Before using your recreational fire pit, please remember to check that the daily ventilation category is “GOOD” by visiting https://dom.burnpermits.com/ or by calling
1-844-904-0766.

Fire pit use is ONLY permitted on “GOOD” vent index days.

A reminder that your recreational fire permit allows you to burn only clean, dry, untreated firewood in a fire pit for personal enjoyment or warmth, essentially a campfire. An adult must be in attendance at all times. Only one fire pit is allowed per property.

Those living in non-municipal garbage collection areas may burn yard debris from October 1 to March 31. A permit is not required, however, the following restrictions apply:

The pile of yard debris to be burned must not exceed 1m in diameter and 1m in height. Please overturn long-standing piles to ensure that wintering critters have opportunity to escape. Only one pile is permitted at a time. A ventilation category of "Good" must be present on the day of burning. Burning cannot begin until one hour after sunrise and must end by 4 p.m. or two hours before sunset, whichever is later. An adult person must be in attendance at all times. Please refer to Bylaw 5962-2020 for full details.

The City of Mission will consider allowing yard clean up in non-municipal garbage collection areas to exceed the current bylaw restrictions if it is performed as part of a FireSmart initiative. For more information contact our FireSmart Coordinator at [email protected].

Land clearing is strictly prohibited in all areas of the City of Mission. Burning of garbage and construction materials/debris is also prohibited.
