Breathing harder isn’t always breathing better.

Many athletes over-ventilate during exercise, increasing breathing frequency instead of breathing deeper. This can increase your perceived effort (RPE), stimulate the sympathetic nervous system, and reduce breathing efficiency.

By slowing your breathing rate and increasing diaphragmatic depth, you can improve alveolar ventilation, support better oxygen delivery through the Bohr effect, calm the nervous system, and make the same workload feel easier.

Train your breathing, not just your muscles.

What’s the difference between an Olympian and an Olympic medalist?

Talent isn’t usually the difference.

The medalist is often the one who consistently does the things others overlook—the “boring” things. Prioritizing sleep. Optimizing recovery. Paying attention to the smallest details. Day after day, year after year.

High performance isn’t built on one extraordinary workout. It’s built on thousands of ordinary decisions made with extraordinary consistency.

Stay tuned for my conversation with Dr. Elie Abirached, where we discuss why recovery and optimization are often the biggest differentiators between good and world-class performance.

Hypoxic Recovery Between Sets!!!

Instead of just resting between sets, I sometimes use an isocapnic breathing device to create mild hypoxia while keeping CO₂ slightly elevated.

This trains the body to perform with less oxygen, improves oxygen extraction, and strengthens the respiratory muscles.

Over time it can help increase VO₂ max, delay fatigue, and improve breathing efficiency.

Train the lungs like you train your legs.

Breathe Better. Live Better.
