In this episode, Lindsay takes us down under to explore one of Australia’s most puzzling cases: the Somerton Man. On December 1st, 1948, an unidentified, well-dressed man was found deceased against a seawall on Somerton Beach in Adelaide. With all labels strategically removed from his clothing, no identification on his person, and a mysterious message in his pocket, discovering who this man was and what led him here proved to be no easy task.
Who owns a shipwreck once it’s found? 🤔
The answer isn’t always as simple as “finders keepers.” Shipwrecks can be protected historical sites, valuable treasure, war graves, or the subject of legal battles that span decades.
This week on Coast Files, we’re joined by Captain Jeff MacKinnon, star of History Channel’s The Death Coast. We dive into what it really takes to locate and salvage historic shipwrecks, the legal and ethical challenges involved, and why preserving our maritime history matters.

For our second entry into the Coast Files Library we have Ghosts in the Tsunami by Richard Lloyd Parry, a book referenced in Episode #64 - PARANORMAL: Japanese Tsunami Ghosts.
Parry conducts interviews from those left behind the March 2011 Fukushima Nuclear disaster caused by the massive tsunami following a 9.1undersea megathrust earthquake off the coast of Japan. Families, loved ones and strangers share stories of ghosts and unexplained encounters with those who lost their lives that day, but maybe don’t realise it.

Intended to be the crown jewel of King Gustav II Adolphus’s 17th-century navy, the ship instead achieved legendary status for a completely different reason: sinking almost immediately on its maiden voyage.
