STATEMENT OCTOBER 4th -

Risebridge began as a passion-driven dream: bringing frontline workers and caring community members together during COVID-19 to offer immediate, practical support to people in our community who were most vulnerable and marginalized.

Many of the people who first came together were single moms, university students, teachers, nurses and grandmothers who simply wanted to help. Over the past five years, that collective effort has grown into several youth programs, BIPoC & 2SLGBTQ+ advocacy, family food support initiatives , outreach programs , various advocacy events, warming centres and seasonal shelter programs—more than we ever imagined possible.

A few things you may not know about Risebridge: we have never had salaried leadership or an HR department. When funding has allowed, we have offered volunteer stipends or contract wages at the same rate to everyone involved in making it happen, regardless of educational or professional background in believing that all community experience and strengths have value.
We have also had very few challenges with the people we serve, even while offering one of the lowest-barrier programs in our region year after year.
This was no small feat, and we are grateful for the opportunity to speak to these successes and experiences, and learning lessons at consulting tables and conferences both provincially and internationally.

From the beginning, we have prioritized putting as much funding as possible directly back into direct community supports. That has also meant many sacrifices and shortcomings for our passion driven team members.
Our programs have never been fully funded through government or grants alone. We have relied on donations, fundraisers, volunteers and the generosity of hundreds of community members to keep this work going.
With all the success , there has also been some very rough patches. There was many months of no funding , or dealing with a level of political challenges and neighbourly anger we never saw coming.

Team members where often harassed just for offering a resource support program or shelter space , and a few individuals that where unwelcome to be involved in our organization any longer or we chose not to align with in community because of differing values and ethics, have become increasingly hostile to deal with.

We are proud of what Risebridge has accomplished, but we also did not anticipate all the challenges that would come with our growth.
Funding cuts, political disputes and the constant public criticism have created added pressure on our very small, grassroots organization already working hard to respond to increasing need.

Our values have always included making both our services and opportunities to contribute as accessible as possible, particularly for people with lived and living experience. We are proud of that commitment, while also recognizing that it can bring complex dynamics—especially without the resources of a large organization or specialized HR team. This has perhaps been our largest learning lesson so far as well.

We are aware of recent public statements about Risebridge again, and directly about some of the people involved with our organization over the years. We do not agree with the claims being made, and it is upsetting to see misinformation shared about an organization and passionate advocates who have given so much of themselves to this community.

At a challenging time politically, we are also proud that some of our team members have chosen to step forward in other ways to serve our community. They had their own identities, careers, relationships and community involvement long before Risebridge, and they remain entitled to pursue their personal passions and even civic interests.

System change does not happen overnight, and it has never come easily.

One of Risebridge’s long-standing sayings is: “Discomfort is trending.” While it is difficult to see derogatory or inaccurate statements shared publicly, what is most difficult is the time and energy these situations take away from the urgent needs in our community.

We believe in the sentiment of “tough on systems; soft on people”. We hope our systems become stronger and healthier very soon to help support the crisis needs in a much better way, including for the front line workers and the community members in need.

If you have further questions or concerns about Risebridge, please reach out directly. Our team is tired, but we stand firmly by our integrity, values and commitment to community.
There are aspects of past challenges we cannot share due to confidentiality and respect for those involved, but we will continue to be accountable in the ways we can.

We are choosing to direct our time and energy wisely, because there is still so much work—and advocacy—to be done.

Want to help? Risebridge is hoping to raise enough funds to expand programming again this winter!
We are also always grateful for donations of warm clothing and food to support our various projects.

We don’t have all the answers or capacity right now - but we continue to do our best with what we have , and we appreciate the recognition of that.

Thank you for standing with our team and initiatives over the past five years.
It truly takes a community🫶🏽

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Overdose can happen to anyone, and every loss matters.
Today, we remember the lives lost, support those affected, and raise awareness about the realities of substance use and overdose.

Every life matters.
Every loss counts.
Let’s replace stigma with compassion, silence with conversation, and judgment with support.

⚠️ “Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued Yellow Heat Warnings for East Vancouver Island and Inland Vancouver Island.

Yellow Heat Warnings continue for many other parts of B.C.

Temperatures in these areas can be a risk to health and safety. Take steps to stay cool.

Heat affects everyone, but the risks are greater for: seniors, people who live alone, people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disease, people with mental illness such as schizophrenia, depression, or anxiety, people with substance use disorders, people with limited mobility.

Check on family, friends and neighbours, who are at higher risk, particularly if they live alone, to make sure they have a cool space.
Watch for the effects of heat illness: heavy sweating, rash, cramps, fainting, high body temperature and the worsening of some health conditions.

Keep your house cool. Turn on your air conditioning (if possible), block the sun by closing curtains or blinds, or relocate to a cooler location such as a basement or public Cooling Centre.

Fans alone cannot effectively lower core body temperature, especially for older adults. Use fans to pull in cooler air from outdoors, but if you or someone you care for is experiencing symptoms of heat illness, find a cooler space.”

Fundraising update: 🚨 ONLY 3 HOURS LEFT 🚨 ATTENTION MIDISLAND COMMUNITY AND THOSE WHO CARE!

We are so incredibly close to reaching our fundraising goal and keeping our summer programming and advocacy efforts alive for Nanaimo!!! 🥹 what felt impossible a few days ago, has become such a renewed sense of hope!

As of right now, we need just $1,125 more to secure continued possibilities for our Nanaimo offerings and additional Oceanside resources 💜🧡🖤❤️

Can you help us get across the finish line?

✨ Could 1 more business or company help with a $1,125 donation?
Or
✨ Could 5 people give $225 each?
Or
✨ Could 10 people give $112.50 each?
Or
✨ Or could many community members contribute whatever they can?

Every dollar makes a difference. Every share helps. Every act of support keeps resources, advocacy, food programming, and low-barrier community connection available for those who need it most. We are beyond grateful for the support we have continued to receive the past few days , and the past few years. Rise has truly become a collective effort and community collaboration org , and so many people each week feel the immediate impact from the resource programs and advocacy services offered.

We have just a few hours left tonight to reach our minimum fundraising goal needed , and we are choosing to believe in the power of community to help us make this happen.

📧 Donations can be sent by e-transfer to: [email protected]

Thank you for standing with us, helping others, and believing in community collaboration and care. 🥹 We will be sharing a much larger post with more details and thank-you’s soon! ❤️🧡🖤💜

Meet Frankie! And all about our community clothing closet 🫶🏽

If you have the capacity and want to make a big impact this summer, donating to RISEBRIDGE today will help us keep our Nanaimo doors open a little longer — and hopefully support us in reopening shelter services soon.

We are up for business sponsorship plans as well!

This work is exhausting. Our team is carrying the weight of constant crisis, funding cuts, government gaps, and the grief of losing clients we have known and loved for years.

At the same time, hundreds of people are relying on us for their only meal, resource connection, or safe community space each week.

The mid-Island area is desperate right now. There is no shelter spaces. No cooling centres or soup kitchens. Very few regular programs that people can access or rely upon. The Oceanside food bank is continuously running out of food…

We want to keep our doors open in Nanaimo this summer so we can at least offer a weekly breakfast/lunch program and continue providing low-barrier resources to people who need them most. And we want to be able to offer support for Oceanside families in need without so many funding barriers.

But we can’t - unless we get enough donations to do so.

Even as a volunteer-led team, we still need to cover the cost of the building and basic program needs this summer.

Please help if you can.
Realistically , we need to raise about $12,000 in order to ensure our operations can continue and plan towards the fall/winter season where we hope to offer a daily shelter program again and hopefully more BIPoC and Q***r friendly drop-in programs!

Please help us if you can.

Because community spaces matter.
Because harm reduction matters.
Because people on the front lines are tired too — and we need help to keep helping. 💜❤️🖤🧡
