Yesterday, the violence that has become all too common in our industry hit home.

One of our own security guards was assaulted while simply doing his job as a Loss Prevention Guard. He was punched in the face while carrying out his lawful duties to protect a local business. Thankfully, he is expected to make a full recovery, but that does not erase what happened.

He is injured. He will miss work. His family will worry. His coworkers will carry the extra workload. Our company feels the impact. And all because someone chose violence.

The irony is hard to ignore. The person accused of assaulting our guard ultimately received treatment in the very same emergency room as the guard they allegedly attacked.

This cannot continue.

Across Ontario and across Canada, security guards are being assaulted at an alarming rate. We are expected to intervene in thefts, de-escalate violent situations, protect businesses, assist the public, and often arrive before emergency services. Yet when security guards are assaulted, it is too often dismissed as if it is simply part of the job.

It is not.

No one should go to work expecting to be punched, kicked, spit on, threatened, or assaulted simply because they wear a security uniform. Security guards deserve to go home safely at the end of every shift, just like everyone else.

For years, our President, Daniel Laprade, has been advocating for stronger protections for security professionals. He has raised these concerns directly with senior levels of government, including the Premier of Ontario, Members of Provincial Parliament, and other government stakeholders. He has spoken about the increasing violence, the lack of protections for private security professionals, and the urgent need for meaningful legislative change.

Unfortunately, the violence has only continued to escalate.

This assault is no longer just another headline to us. It happened to one of our own.

If there was ever a time to stand together as an industry, it is now. We are done accepting the idea that violence against security guards is "just part of the job." We will continue to advocate, continue to speak out, and continue to demand change until those making decisions understand that enough is enough.

To our injured guard, we are incredibly proud of your professionalism and courage. Your KC Security Services family stands behind you, and we wish you a full and speedy recovery.

And to our elected officials and decision makers: the time for conversations has passed. Security guards deserve stronger protections, meaningful accountability for those who assault them, and recognition for the vital role they play in keeping our communities safe.

This incident has only strengthened our resolve. You injured one of our own, and you've awakened an even stronger voice. We are going to keep pushing, keep speaking, and keep fighting until real change happens.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) following the tragic loss of Sgt. Malcolm, who died in the line of duty due to a motorcycle crash on Highway 401 near Burnham Street North in Cobourg, Ontario.

Sgt. Malcolm's dedication to serving and protecting the community will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time. We stand in solidarity with the OPP and honor the sacrifice made by those who serve.

Armed capability in private security is not a radical position. It is standard practice in the United States and across much of the developed world. In Canada, we have decided that the optics of an armed guard are more uncomfortable than the reality of an unarmed one bleeding on a mall floor.
That calculus needs to change.
