The FDA just recalled a "fat burner" found to contain an undeclared prescription drug and DNP, a toxic industrial chemical that has been linked to deaths.
It was sold directly to people online, with no quality controls to verify what was actually inside.
What you put in your body deserves more than a good ad. Before you take a new supplement, look for products that are third-party tested and from a reputable source.

A "normal" magnesium result and an optimal one aren't always the same thing.
We looked at more than 10,000 RBC-magnesium results across our clinical dataset. 88.4% fell below the optimal range, while only 4.4% fell below Quest's lower reference limit. Most results, 83.9%, landed between those two thresholds. Same measurements, very different classification depending on where you draw the line.
There's another layer worth sitting with. Magnesium is distributed largely inside cells and tissues, while serum magnesium stays tightly regulated. That means different tests hand you different pieces of the same clinical picture.
For patients with factors that can affect magnesium status, including long-term PPI or diuretic use, the test you choose, the threshold you apply, and the broader clinical context all shape what you do next.

Nearly half of the female ferritin results we analyzed fell below optimal.
In more than 11,000 female ferritin results, 48.5% came in under the optimal range of 40 ng/mL. Most landed in the gap between the standard lab reference limit and what optimal iron status actually looks like.
That gap is the whole point. Ferritin reflects iron stores, and iron can run low well before anemia develops. So when a patient has fatigue, reduced exercise tolerance, or hair changes, a result inside the reference range may not be the end of the clinical conversation.

Fullscript analyzed 200,000+ de-identified lab results and one marker stood out more than any other. It's also the one barely being tested.
Omega-3 showed up in just 6.3% of patient profiles, one of the least-tested markers in the dataset. But when it was measured, 93.2% of results fell below optimal, the highest below-optimal share of all 10 nutrient biomarkers we looked at.
Omega-3 fatty acids play a role in inflammatory signaling and the resolution of inflammation, so omega-3 status can be clinically relevant in personalized care.
Testing gives providers a baseline to inform diet and supplementation, and a way to track whether those changes are actually moving the needle over time.

Supplements only help when what’s on the label is in the bottle.
The best way to ensure this for you and your patients is getting your supplements from a source you can trust.
Before making your next supplement order, consider whether they meet the following quality standards:
✅ Does the retailer rigorously test products for purity and potency?
✅ Are the products made by trusted manufacturers with high-quality ingredients?
✅ Does the retailer source products directly from suppliers?
✅ Does the retailer store products in FDA-regulated, specialized facilities?
High-quality care starts with supplements you can believe in.
More data doesn’t equal better care.
When patients receive lab results without clinical guidance, they can often feel lost.
The fix? More guidance from providers, not less data.
Dr. Kristin Oja uses Labs on Fullscript to build guided pathways that walk patients through their labs step by step — so they know what their results mean and what comes next.
We break down her full workflow inside Dr. Kara Fitzgerald's upcoming Functional Medicine is Longevity Medicine Masterclass September 18-19.

Trust is earned through transparency.
During a round of spot testing, a gummy supplement in our catalog was flagged for substantially failing to meet its potency claims.
Even when a product is popular, we will always prioritize integrity over sales. We removed this product from our catalog permanently.
