Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day.

Today, we honour the children who were taken from their families and communities and subjected to the violence and harms of residential schools. We honour survivors, families, and communities who continue to carry those impacts, and we recognize that colonialism and injustice continue to affect Indigenous peoples today.

But this work cannot belong to one day.

In “Braiding Sweetgrass,” Robin Wall Kimmerer has a chapter called “Becoming Indigenous to Place.” She writes that settlers cannot become Indigenous, but that we can become naturalized — much like our plant ally, Plantago. To become naturalized is to learn how to belong to a place through relationship, reciprocity, responsibility, and care.

That idea feels deeply connected to what we are always working toward at Earth Path: becoming better guests, neighbours, and stewards of the places we call home.

That means learning the histories, both brutal and beautiful, of these lands; learning about treaties and our responsibilities to one another; listening to Indigenous voices and knowledge keepers; and thinking carefully about what it means to be settlers in relationship with the land.

It also means the everyday work of caring for place: tending our spaces, protecting habitat, planting native species, learning the names of the beings around us, and teaching children that the land is not simply something we use, but something we are in relationship with.

Today, our programs will spend time in stewardship and reflection as we mark this day together.

And tomorrow, we will keep learning.

Because reconciliation is not a lesson we teach once a year, but something we keep tending 🧡

There’s a relationship between land and song that’s as old as time. Some say we learned to sing from the birds. Science tells us that whales pass down songs from generation to generation. Each time we open our windows, we can become present to the humming ‘choir of all beings’ that sings all around us.

In a time where many of us are awakening to the challenges faced by our more-than-human kin, how can we participate in this choir? And what possibilities open up when we do?

This song circle invites an exploration of:

Community Song
Singing together in the oral tradition is one of the most beautiful ways we can bring our hearts together. We’ll sing songs inspired by the more than human world, that weave harmonies, and poetry. No experience necessary- we will all sound beautiful together!

Singing the Land
We’ll drop into connection with the landscape and practice singing in response to or ‘from’ the different inhabitants of the ecosystem.

The title of this song circle is a nod to Joanna Macy whose work brings us into connection with the voices of the wild other. And in this circle we’ll gently explore this practice.

This afternoon is an exploration of the connection between song and landscape, together we will:

- Learn and sing community songs in the oral tradition as a group
- Drop-in through sensory awareness to the landscape
- Practice using our voices to sound and respond to the more-than-human world
- Share connection with each other and,
- Play with harmony,
- Welcome all experiences…laughter, tears, longing, grief, silliness, wonder.

This immersive 6-month series invites us to slow down, step outside, and truly notice the world around us. Together, we’ll follow the tracks of wild animals, learn the stories and uses of trees, gather food and medicine from the land, wildcraft with materials we harvest, and tend fires under open skies. Through the eyes of naturalists, we’ll explore the quiet patterns of ecology alongside practical wilderness skills that root us more deeply in relationship with the land, ourselves, and each other.
