Ottawa Wolves RFC
The Ottawa Wolves are a Inclusive Rugby Football Club in Canada’s National Capital. The Wolves expanded in 2013 with the introduction of a women’s side.
The Ottawa Wolves form a Rugby Football Club for men and women in Canada’s National Capital Region. The Club was founded by Carl Pilon and Jay Smidt in 2008 with the mission to promote and encourage participation in rugby among those who have traditionally been under-represented in the game. The team members are predominantly part of the LGBTQA community, but diverse in its make-up, and inclusive of everyone. The club fielded its first side in the Eastern Ontario Rugby Union (EORU) Men’s Division II in 2009. That same year, the Wolves became a member of the International Gay Rugby association. In 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016 the Wolves traveled all over the world to take part in the Bingham Cup, on of the world’s largest amateur gay rugby tournaments. During the very first tournament, in Minneapolis, the Wolves competed in the Bingham Spoon division but ultimately lost in the final. Two years later, the Wolves claimed the Hoagland Tribute Cup Consolation Prize at Bingham Cup VI in Machester, England. In 2014, the team traveled across the entire world to Sydney Australia to reach the Finals of the Hoagland Cup, and in 2016 claimed the Hoagland Jug with a victory over the Toronto Muddy York in Nashville. Join us on the pitch in Eastern Ontario this year. Come try out our practices, watch our games and maybe even play by our side. We’re always recruiting new and experienced players!

Mark Kendall Bingham - September 11th, 2001 🕊️
25 years later, we remember Mark Bingham and the 2,977 people who tragically lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Mark was openly gay and played rugby for the San Francisco Fog and the Gotham Knights.
On the morning of September 11th, Mark was travelling home to San Francisco aboard United Flight 93. Having overslept, he nearly missed his flight and was the last passenger to board, even asking to hold the door for him.
Approximately 46 minutes into the flight, Flight 93 was hijacked. After learning what was happening on the ground, Mark and fellow passengers made the courageous decision to fight back and attempt to regain control of the aircraft by storming the cockpit. Their actions prevented the plane from reaching its intended target in Washington, D.C. Flight 93 ultimately crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Mark Bingham’s courage and selflessness became part of a story that continues to inspire generations including an international rugby community.
Today, the IGR comes together to remember Mark, honour his legacy, and remember all those whose lives were taken that day. The Mark Kendall Memorial Tournament was established 2002 in his honour.
