Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, our team is pausing to learn and reflect. We're remembering Residential School Survivors, their families, those who never returned home, and the communities that continue to feel the effects of the residential school system.

Reconciliation is ongoing work, so we hope our community will join us in making space to deepen our understanding of this history and its intergenerational effects.

We are thrilled to announce that Meg Krueger has been appointed as Humane Canada’s next Chief Executive Officer, beginning October 26, 2026.

Meg is a collaborative and values-driven leader with extensive experience leading national organizations and advancing animal welfare through policy, education, partnerships, and strategic growth. Most recently, she served as CEO of Equestrian Canada where she helped advance equine health and welfare through national policy, standards, education and evidence based initiatives, including work that supported the recognition of horses as sentient beings. Meg has dedicated much of her career to improving the welfare of animals and strengthening the organizations that serve them.

As we prepare for this exciting transition, we look forward to working alongside Meg to continue building a stronger future for animals and the people who care for them.

Please join us in welcoming Meg to the Humane Canada family! 🐾

Less than a month after arriving at Oceanogràfic Valencia in Spain, Jelly Bean, a 19-year-old beluga formerly held at Marineland, has died. She is now the third former Marineland beluga to die following the recent relocation efforts.

In the days before her death, Jelly Bean had experienced feeding difficulties but had reportedly shown signs of improvement. Her death was sudden, and the cause is not yet known. A necropsy is underway.

These losses are deeply concerning. While the relocation of these animals offered hope for improved care, their deaths raise many questions.

We mourn Jelly Bean and all the whales lost and are calling for all investigation and necropsy findings to be made public. Transparency is essential to understanding what happened and to protecting the belugas who remain in captivity.
