Another heartbreaking loss. ๐Ÿ’”๐Ÿ‹

Caspian, a 27-year-old female beluga rescued from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ont., has died at Chicagoโ€™s Shedd Aquarium. She had been eating less for weeks, and when her condition collapsed on Wednesday, staff kept her on life support for nearly four hours, but she couldnโ€™t be saved.

She is the fourth former Marineland beluga to die at Shedd since the whales arrived this summer. Peekachu (23), Osiris (26) and Rain (20) died in late August and September. Shedd also lost Beethoven, a 34-year-old beluga who had lived there for years. In Spain, another rescued Marineland beluga, Jelly Bean, died at Oceanogrร fic Valencia. That means six belugas have died, five of them from Marineland.

Shedd says the rescued whales were โ€œmade vulnerable by chronic and severe illness.โ€ Early necropsy findings showed long-term problems such as gut disease, liver damage and lung scarring. Six of the 10 belugas Shedd took in are still alive and are eating full diets while staff watch them closely. (Sources: WTTW News, Chicago Sun-Times, FOX 32 Chicago, Oct. 9.)

They finally left the tanks they grew up in, but for many, it came too late.

Could a kitchen staple help save Canadian farms? ๐Ÿฅ”๐ŸŒฑ

Scientists with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada spent four years testing products in Prince Edward Island to help potato farmers fight weeds that no longer respond to herbicides. Their surprising answer: baking soda. Blasted at weeds with a sandblaster, the common leavening agent could give farmers a new way to control stubborn weeds. (Source: CTV News, Oct. 9.)

From the kitchen cupboard to the potato field.

Would you try it in your own garden? ๐Ÿ‘‡

162 years ago today, a group of politicians sat down in Quebec City and started sketching out a new country. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ“œ

On Oct. 10, 1864, the Quebec Conference opened. Delegates from the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland met to plan a union of British North America, just weeks after the Charlottetown Conference.

Over about two and a half weeks, they drafted the 72 Resolutions, the blueprint for Confederation. Those resolutions became the basis of the British North America Act, and on July 1, 1867, Canada was born.

Two and a half weeks of debate in Quebec City shaped the country we live in today.

A proud day for Canada! ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ…

Toronto-born poet, essayist, translator and classicist Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy honoured her for her "bold and inventive oeuvre," saying her work lives at "the intersection between the philologist's obsession with words and the poet's desire for new meaning." The prize is worth about $1.7 million.

Carson, born in 1950, taught classics at McGill University for many years and is a Member of the Order of Canada. She has won two Griffin Poetry Prizes and the T. S. Eliot Prize, among many other honours. Since the announcement, her book sales, library holds and streams have surged. (Sources: McGill Reporter, ABC News, CNN, CTV News, Oct. 8โ€“9.)

From Toronto to Stockholm, a Canadian voice is now among the world's greatest writers.
