On this National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we acknowledge the dark history of medical research in Canada as it relates to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit populations, and the present reality that these communities are underrepresented and underserved in medical research and practice. We commit to righting this wrong wherever we are able, by supporting Indigenous youth in medical research, encouraging researchers to learn about Indigenous Rights, and representing Indigenous ways of knowing in medical research. We encourage you to take some time today to learn more about the survivors and victims of the Residential and Day Schools, and the ways systemic racism has impacted First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities in Canada.

! My name is Amelia Custodio and I have just completed my second year pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology at the University of Calgary. This summer I have been lucky enough to work alongside Dr. Mahoney at the University of Calgary while completing my BioCanRX Summer Studentship. My work is focused on the development of a drug and antigen controlled switch that, when activated, helps immune cells called macrophages to support anti-cancer responses. By testing different methods to keep these cells in a pro‑inflammatory, tumour‑clearing state, our goal is to create immune cells that can stay strong inside the tumour environment and improve future cancer treatments.
