I used to think guilt was evidence.

If I felt guilty, perhaps I was being selfish. Maybe I should do more, try harder or reconsider.

I’m learning that guilt doesn’t always mean we’ve done something wrong. Sometimes it simply means we’ve done something differently.

We’ve said no. Rested. Asked for help. Changed our mind. Chosen something because it mattered to us.

The feeling may still be there.

But it doesn’t have to make the decision.

Sometimes we hesitate to acknowledge what we want because having a preference can feel uncomfortably close to insisting on getting our way.

But those aren't the same thing.

You can prefer one thing and choose another. You can know what you'd like and still be flexible. You can hear your own answer without requiring anyone else to agree with it.

Sometimes a preference is simply information.

Something worth knowing about yourself.

A preference doesn't have to become a demand before it deserves to be heard.

After years of listening for what everyone else needs, it can become surprisingly difficult to hear what we want.

Not the big things. Not a five-year plan or a new purpose.

Sometimes it begins with something much smaller.

What sounds good to me?

What do I miss?

What would I choose if no one else were asking anything of me?

This week's Best Life Simplified letter is about learning to hear those quieter answers again.

I've spent a lot of years treating available time as something that should be put to good use.

An unexpected hour? I could get ahead.

A quiet evening? Surely there's something I could finish.

But lately I've been wondering whether creating more space in our lives is only half the story.

Perhaps the other half is learning how to leave some of it alone.

This week's Best Life Simplified letter is about our instinct to fill the space we worked so hard to create, and what we might discover if we occasionally let it remain open.

Sometimes room is valuable simply because it gives us somewhere to be.

I’m learning that life doesn’t have to stand still for me to feel steady.

Things change. Plans shift. Some seasons feel calm, while others ask more of us than we expected.

But beneath all of that movement, there can still be something quiet and familiar to return to.

A walk by the water. The sound of the waves. A few moments with nowhere else I need to be.

Maybe peace isn’t about waiting for everything to settle.

Maybe it’s learning to find our way back to ourselves, even while life keeps moving.

Not everything needs to be left behind.

There are people, values, traditions, responsibilities and parts of ourselves that we still want in the life ahead.

Sometimes the question isn’t whether something stays or goes.

It’s whether we can carry it differently.

Keep what you love. Keep what still feels true. You’re allowed to loosen your hold on everything that became attached to it along the way.

There’s something about being surrounded by trees that makes everything feel a little quieter.

The noise fades. My thoughts settle. I notice the light, the breeze, the sound of my own footsteps, and suddenly there’s nowhere else I need to be.

I’m learning that I don’t always need to figure things out or make the most of every moment.

Sometimes I just need to walk, breathe, look around and remember how good it feels to simply be here.

You don’t have to become someone else to live differently.

Sometimes change isn’t about reinventing yourself. It’s about recognizing what is still true about you, while loosening some of the expectations and old rules you’ve carried for far too long.

You can move forward and still be you. Perhaps even more so.

I've been thinking about how easily we can confuse gratitude with obligation.

Because something was good for us, we think we should keep wanting it.

Because a chapter mattered, we think we should stay there.

But perhaps we don't have to make an earlier part of our lives wrong in order to grow beyond it.

We can honour who we were, appreciate what that season gave us, and still make room for who we're becoming.

Sometimes that's enough.

I’m learning to let myself be where I am, instead of always thinking about where I need to be next.

To slow down. To notice. To enjoy the ordinary moments that are so easy to hurry past.

There will always be something else to do. But this moment is part of my life too.

And I don’t want to miss it because I was too busy rushing toward the next one.
