The owner can look up its location.” I teach digital safety for a living, and the nervousness still hit my stomach instantly. I’ve talked about digital stalking in theory. It had never actually happened to me. So I started investigating. The alert handed me a timeline: first seen 6:49 PM, last seen 12:07 AM, the device following me across multiple spots for hours. My mind went straight to the worst version. I’d been out at an event, around a lot of people, away from my bag. Someone could’ve slipped something in my purse. It sent me down a rabbit hole all weekend, retracing every step. And then it clicked: a friend had picked me up, we went to a birthday party, and dropped me off right at midnight. The tracker wasn’t a stalker. It was sitting in her bag the whole ride. But what if it hadn’t been that simple? Here’s what I want you to take from this: my phone caught it and warned me.
