The Prince Rupert Library | Wap Liitsx is excited to introduce Luke Parnell, the Indigenous Storyteller in Residence for Fall/Winter 2026! Luke comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and extensive background in a variety of mediums:

"My Nisga'a name is Guxw Gahlgan (always carving) and is Laxgiik (eagle) from Wilps Kwa'kaans. My mother is Nisga'a from Gingolx and my father was Haida from Masset. I have been a carver for over 20 years and though my primary medium is wood, my materiality is determined on a project by project basis.

My practice explores the relationship between Northwest Coast Indigenous oral histories and Northwest Coast Indigenous art, centring on narrative. I create these artworks in order to understand these histories and concepts and their relationship to contemporary events."

There are a number of events planned that will be hosted by Luke at the Library, as well as a community art piece which seeks to answer the question, "What does the Library mean to you?"

Stay tuned for more dates and details. Welcome Luke!

We're really excited for this event in partnership with the North Coast Ecology Centre Society! Happening at the Library on October 8th at 7pm, this talk is free and open to anyone! While you're here, check out a copy of Spencer and Rachel Greening's new book "Gyetk, Coastal Fusion and Ancestral Knowledge from a Ts’msyen Kitchen".

We are back October 8th with another Coastal Conversation at the Library! Dr. Spencer Greening is Ts’msyen (Tsimshian) and a community member of the Gitga’at First Nation (Hartley Bay). He is an anthropologist who has worked professionally within his territory for over a decade, where he conducts cultural research centering on Ts’msyen ecological knowledge, stewardship, harvesting laws, and on how we can relate better to the non-human world. Outside of his research, he enjoys facilitating land-based food sovereignty workshops with youth, and is hunting and fishing as often as he can. Spencer is Currently a Liber Ero postdoctoral fellow at the University of Victoria and we are excited to have him join us!
