Most visitors drive straight past three of Vancouver Island's best spots on their way to the beach. Here's what they're missing this fall.

Fall on Vancouver Island is quieter and cooler, and the shoulder season is one of our favourite times to send guests exploring. Here are three day trips worth the drive when you're staying with us.

1. Go underground at Horne Lake
Horne Lake Caves is one of the most accessible cave systems in BC, and fall is ideal timing before winter closures. Book a guided tour or explore the self-guided cave on your own. Bring a light layer since it stays cool underground year-round.

2. Walk an old-growth forest
MacMillan Provincial Park is a short drive from Qualicum Beach and holds some of the oldest trees on Vancouver Island. The Cathedral Grove loop takes about 30 minutes and puts you among Douglas firs over 800 years old. Go on a weekday morning in September and you'll often have the trail nearly to yourself.

3. Do a craft beverage loop
The Coombs corridor packs a w**ery, a brewery, and a distillery within a few kilometres of each other. Start at Mooberry Winery for a self-guided farm tour, then stop at Arrowsmith Brewery for a tasting flight, and finish at Misguided Spirits in the town famous for its rooftop goats. Designate a driver or plan it as a two-day split.
