Flashback Sunday 📷

🫎 Sometimes knowing when to take the photo also means knowing when to leave.

I took this photo one autumn during the rut, as this magnificent bull moose was thrashing his massive antlers through the shrubs.

At first, this behaviour helps remove the itchy, peeling remnants of dried velvet that protected his antlers while they were growing. But once that velvet is gone and the rut is underway, all that crashing and thrashing takes on another purpose.

It becomes both an acoustic and visual announcement to other moose in the area: I’m here. I’m big. And I’m ready!

As wildlife photographers, understanding behaviour is every bit as important as knowing our camera settings. A bull moose during the rut deserves plenty of space, and knowing the warning signs can tell you when it’s time to stop photographing and move on.

I knew I had my shot, and I also knew this was my cue to quietly leave him to his business.
