TALK — A Perfectly Messed-Up Story: On Imperfection, Change, and Finding Our Way in University Life

Drawing on diverse stories from her research, as well as related teaching and community engagement experiences, Dr. Susie Andrews reflects on what she is learning about imperfection, gratitude, and change through accounts of mess and mistakes at the heart of her scholarly work.

These include tales of the seventh-century statues of amanojaku (demons) that stand querulously before Honganji temple; the story of a snapped sprig of hypericum buds that occassioned a crucial lesson about beauty and brokeness; and accounts of journeys from naive optimism through periods of discouragement to new beginnings including the one told in Patrick McDonnell's picturebook from which the talk takes its title.

Together, these sources invite us to consider how imperfection, unexpected turns, and even things that seem to have gone wrong can bring gratitude, wisdom, and possibility as we find our way in university life and beyond.
