We’re Mike and Allisha — partners in business, in life, and the two people behind Hooked Fish & Seafood and Grassroots Vertical Farm . 🐟🌱

Most of you already know Mike. He’s usually the more familiar face at Hooked, working with customers, sourcing seafood, developing products and keeping a lot of the day-to-day moving.

You may not know me quite as well — I’m Allisha. I’m usually more behind the scenes, handling a lot of the bookkeeping, social media and messages on Facebook and Instagram. If you’ve messaged us online, there’s a good chance you’ve been talking to me. You can usually tell because there tend to be a few more heart emojis involved. ❤️

I’m also the writer between the two of us, so if one of our posts suddenly turns into a small novel, you can probably blame me. 😂

We bring different strengths to the table, bounce ideas off each other, make the big decisions together and figure out how to keep moving things forward. And, just for the record, the custom seafood boil kits were my idea. 😉

People ask us all the time how the businesses are doing, and the short answer is: busy, challenging, exciting — and moving forward. 🚀

We’ve come a long way in a pretty short amount of time, with plenty of obstacles along the way. Hooked continues to grow, we’re always developing new products and ideas, and Grassroots Vertical Farm is steadily taking shape.

For those who aren’t familiar with it, Grassroots Vertical Farm is our indoor hydroponic farm outside of Battleford, Saskatchewan, where we grow fresh leafy greens and herbs year-round. The farm is about halfway built now, and we’re already harvesting from the sections that are up and running. 🌱🥬

Somewhere in the middle of all of that, we’re also raising a 15-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter, while working a pretty crazy number of hours. Some days it feels like Mike and I are mostly just high-fiving each other in passing. 😂 Life is rarely quiet around here.

Looking ahead, our plan is to eventually bring everything together under one umbrella as Grassroots Market — seafood, our own farm production, Saskatchewan-made products and more.

At the end of the day, what we’re building is bigger than any one product or part of the business. We want to produce more food here at home, collaborate with and support Saskatchewan producers, and make more locally grown and locally made food available to people across our province.
