The Anishinaabe calendar follows the moon cycles. Thirteen Moons guide the year, each reflecting changes in the environment and carrying teachings for living mino‑bimaadiziwin (the good life). Names and teachings vary across regions and communities.

The ninth moon of Creation is the Corn Moon, a time when we learn about the cycle of life. Each cob of corn has thirteen rows of multicolored seeds, representing all the spirits waiting to begin their Earth Walk. These are the future generations for whom we must prepare for their walk through life and their journey ahead. The Corn Moon is not only about harvest or growth, but about responsibility as future beings are coming; the living is called to prepare the world for them.

What does it mean to you to have a responsibility to prepare the world for future generations?
