🧡 October is Mi’kmaw History Month at Springhill High School!

Throughout October, SHS will recognize and celebrate Mi’kmaw history, culture, traditions, language, and the important contributions of the Mi’kmaq, past and present.

Our students and staff will have a number of opportunities to learn, participate, and connect throughout the month, with ideas suggested by our staff, students, and community members!

Mi’kmaw History Month is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the history of Mi’kma’ki, learn from Mi’kmaw knowledge and traditions, and strengthen the relationships we share today.

We look forward to a great month of learning, listening, participating, and celebrating together at SHS.

Msit No’kmaq — All My Relations.

🧡🧡🧡 ORANGE SHIRT DAY – (Observed) TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 🧡🧡🧡

👕🧡 Wear Orange. Wear Your Favourite T-Shirt. Wear It With Purpose. 🧡👕🧡

On Tuesday, September 29th, we encourage all SHS students and staff to wear orange or their favourite T-shirt as we come together to recognize Orange Shirt Day and honour the children who were taken from their families and communities and forced to attend residential schools.

🧡 Why orange?

Orange Shirt Day (which is actually Sept 30th) was inspired by the story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, a Northern Secwépemc (Shuswap) woman and residential school survivor.

When Phyllis was six years old, she was taken from her family and sent to the Mission school near Williams Lake, British Columbia. For her first day of school, her grandmother had bought her a brand-new orange shirt. Phyllis was excited to wear it.

When she arrived at the residential school, her new orange shirt was taken away from her and she never got to wear it again. This experience became a powerful symbol of how residential schools stripped Indigenous children of their identity, culture, family connections, and sense of belonging.

🧡👕 “Every Child Matters.” 👕🧡

Orange Shirt Day reminds us to listen to Survivors, learn about the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, and work toward truth, reconciliation, respect, and understanding.

🍊 Tuesday, September 29th:
🧡 Wear ORANGE
👕 Or wear your FAVOURITE T-SHIRT
🤝 Take time to LEARN, LISTEN & REFLECT
🧡 Remember: EVERY CHILD MATTERS

There will be no classes on Wednesday, September 30th as we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Let’s fill SHS with ORANGE, HEARTS, SHIRTS & SUPPORT as we remember the children, honour Survivors, and continue learning together. 🧡🧡🧡

🧡🍊👕🧡🍊👕🧡🍊👕🧡🍊👕🧡
EVERY CHILD MATTERS.
