Part 4
Feed's only part of it. (Mark gets into the mineral and gut health side of receiving calves and wraps the series with how it all adds up to keep gains coming and calves healthy.
Brian's back with a check-in on our fall calf marketing series! We're following the same set of calves through four different ways to market them this fall, and tracking each one in real time right up to late October.
Here's a quick refresher on the four scenarios:
1️⃣ Wait & Sell – Keep the calves and sell at the end of October at whatever the market pays that week.
2️⃣ Forward Sell – Lock in a price now for late-October delivery.
3️⃣ Hold + Buy a Put – Keep the calves, but buy a price floor in case the market drops.
4️⃣ Forward Sell + Buy a Call – Lock in a price, and keep a ticket to any big market rally.
The futures market has moved since we set these up, so Brian walks through where the put and call options sit today. He also explains what that means for each strategy. Remember, an option works like insurance. Sometimes you pay for protection you end up not needing, and that's part of the plan.
There's no "right" answer yet. We'll keep tracking all four until the calves sell, then compare the final numbers side by side.

Corn silage is right around the corner. Ken discusses a couple things to look for before chopping Corn silage including the risk of mycotoxins.

Part 3
Getting calves to eat is half the battle. Mark breaks down how to start them on feed so they transition without a slump.
Part 3 of 6
This fall, Brian's running an experiment: 550 lb steers, marketed four different ways tracked live, dollar for dollar, right through the end of October.
Here's the options:
1 - Wait do nothing, sell at October's spot price
2 - The Lock forward sell now and know your number today
3 - The Upside lock your price, buy a call, still cash in if the market runs
4 -The Floor hold the calves and buy a put for downside protection
👉 Follow along so you don't miss an update. And tell us: which play would you make? 👇
Part 2
The truck's unloaded. Now what? Mark walks through the first 48 hours rest, water, and low-stress handling before you worry about anything else.
Part 2 of 6
Part 1
New calves coming in? The first few days set the tone for the whole pen. Dr. Mark Cameron kicks off a 6-part series on getting received right starting with why those first hours are so important.
