Harvest Healing Update

We’ve had a change in the harvest schedule.

We will now be harvesting the vegetables on Tuesday, September 29, and they will be available for distribution on Thursday, October 1.

We are still looking for volunteers so if you would like to help please let us know!

Please disregard the previously announced September 24 pickup date.

I’ll post the exact pickup times for veterans and Legion members once everything is finalized.

Thank you for your understanding, and thank you to everyone helping make Harvest Healing possible.

Beverly’s Homestyle Cooking will be closed this evening, Saturday, September 19.

25 years ago today, the world changed.

September 11, 2001 will always be remembered for the lives that were lost, the families who were forever changed, and the bravery of the first responders and ordinary people who stepped forward in unimaginable circumstances.

For me, this anniversary also hits very close to home.

I remember it clear as day, sitting in my classroom, and being told by the teacher to pack up all of our personal belongings as there was a tragedy that had happened and they needed our school to house people and they were unsure when we would return to school.

I’m from Glenwood, Newfoundland and Labrador, just outside of Gander — one of the small Newfoundland communities that became part of an incredible story in the days following 9/11.

When thousands of passengers were unexpectedly diverted to Newfoundland, people across Gander, Glenwood and the surrounding communities did what Newfoundlanders do. They opened their homes, schools and community halls. They cooked, found beds, gave rides, made phone calls and welcomed complete strangers like family.

That story eventually became Come From Away.

Recently, I had the opportunity through Beverly’s Home-Style Cooking to cater a Newfoundland kitchen party for the Calgary production of Come From Away. Then, for the first time in my life, I actually got to sit down and watch the show.

I don’t think I was prepared for how emotional it would be.

Watching places I know, people who felt familiar, our way of speaking, our humour and our way of taking care of people represented on that stage was something completely different when you come from there.

There were moments that made me laugh because it felt so much like home, and moments that hit incredibly hard when you remember why that story exists in the first place.

It was also a very full-circle feeling — being more than 5,000 kilometres from home in Alberta, feeding the cast and crew at a Newfoundland kitchen party, and then sitting in the audience watching them tell a story about the communities I grew up around.

Come From Away isn't just a theatre show to me anymore.

It represents a piece of home.

It represents the Newfoundland I know — when somebody needs help, you feed them, find them somewhere to sit, put the kettle on, and figure the rest out afterward.

Today, on the 25th anniversary of September 11th, I’m remembering the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives, the families who still carry that loss, the first responders, and everyone whose life changed that day.

And I’m incredibly proud of my little corner of Newfoundland — Glenwood, Gander and all of the surrounding communities — for showing the world what kindness, community and hospitality can look like during one of humanity’s darkest moments.

25 years later, their story is still being told around the world.

And I’m very proud to say that’s home❤️

🥕 THE GREAT HARVEST IS BACK! 🥔

On September 22, we will be collecting fresh vegetables from our generous donators—and we would love some extra hands!

If you would like to volunteer to help pick produce, please send us a message for details.

The fresh produce will be available for pickup on September 24 at the Strathmore Legion:

🇨🇦 Veterans-only access: 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m.
🍂 Legion-member pickup: 5:00–8:00 p.m.

Not currently a member? Legion memberships are free this year. You can come in, complete a membership application and then participate in the evening pickup.

Please bring your own bags or boxes and take what you need. All produce is completely free and available while quantities last.

Any produce remaining after the event will be donated to an organization supporting people in need.

Please share so we can reach local veterans, Legion members and anyone interested in volunteering!
