NeurOptimal® Rentals, and individualized Counselling and Neurofeedback training for mental fitness.

Doug West is an RCC with the BCACC, an Advanced NeurOptimal® Trainer, Zengar Institute Certification Instructor, and NeurOptimal® Sales Representative. Doug is a clinical counselor, art therapist, & neurofeedback practitioner who has been working with youth and adults since 1993. He has vast experience working with individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and other neurodiverse populations using NeurOptimal training in conjunction with other modalities. Based on these findings, Doug incorporates neurofeedback training in all aspects of his work with all clients. This non-invasive training acts as a “peak performance” tool allowing the brain to perform to the best of its ability. Doug was the Director of the Parent Driven Autism Services for 7
years for SOS Children’s Village BC. This was the first fully accredited (CARF) Neurofeedback program in BC. He has worked with the Vancouver and Surrey School Districts, as well as several large private organizations in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. Doug has been a past presenter and trainer with UBC, Langara College, Douglas College, the 2018 NeurOptimal Focus on Research Conference, and BCACC’s 2019 Wired Together Conference. Currently, Doug is the owner / operator of DRW NeuroPerformance, and is a Registered Clinical Counsellor with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, an Authorized Provider with the First Nations Health Authority, an Advanced NeurOptimal® Trainer, Zengar Institute Certification Instructor, and NeurOptimal® Sales Representative.

Clinic visits don't work for every family. And honestly, for some children — especially those with sensory sensitivities or already packed schedules — travelling to a new location for every session is a real barrier.

That's exactly why we offer the at-home NeurOptimal® rental program.

Here's how it works: For $1,000, you receive 30 days of unlimited sessions with the same professional-grade NeurOptimal® system we use in our Surrey clinic — delivered to your door. I provide full setup training and remote support throughout. Your whole household can use it.

No commute. No waiting room. No sensory surprises. Just brain training in the most comfortable environment possible — your own home.

If you've been curious about neurofeedback but clinic visits feel like too much right now, this might be what makes it possible for your family.

I get asked this all the time: "What actually happens during a neurofeedback session? What does my child have to do?"

Honest answer: not much. That's the whole point.

A NeurOptimal® session is 33 minutes. Your child sits comfortably — in a chair, on a couch, wherever they feel relaxed. They listen to music or watch something on a screen. Two tiny sensors rest gently on the scalp and three on the ears. The sensors simply listen. Nothing goes into the brain — no electricity, no stimulation, nothing.

When the system detects that the brain's activity has shifted in a way that could be more efficient, the music briefly interupts for a fraction of a second. That tiny pause is the brain's "mirror moment" — information that lets it self-correct, naturally.

Your child doesn't need to focus, sit perfectly still, or try to do anything. The brain does the work. Most children find it genuinely relaxing. Some fall asleep.

"Neurodiverse-affirming" is a phrase that gets used a lot. I want to tell you what it actually means in my practice.

At DRW NeuroPerformance, it means I believe autism is a neurotype — a genuinely different way of experiencing the world — not a disorder to be corrected or a set of behaviours to be trained away.

When I work with an autistic child, my goal is never to make them "less autistic." My goal is to support their nervous system so they can feel more comfortable, regulated, and settled in their daily life.

A child who sleeps better, has fewer meltdowns, and navigates transitions a little more smoothly isn't a "fixed" child. They're a child whose nervous system has the support it needs to do what it's always been capable of.

That's what neurodiverse-affirming care looks like — in neurofeedback and in the counselling I offer alongside it.

For parents of autistic children in BC, the question of how to access funding for the right therapies is one I hear constantly. So I wrote this guide to help answer it.

"Neurofeedback and Autism in BC: What Families Need to Know About BC Autism Funding" covers:
✅ What BC Autism Funding is and how families use it at DRW
✅ How NeurOptimal® neurofeedback works — in plain, simple terms
✅ What it may support: sleep, emotional regulation, sensory sensitivity, focus
✅ What neurodiverse-affirming care actually means in my practice
✅ The full path from free consultation to your child's first session

If you've been curious about neurofeedback but weren't sure where to start — this is the post for you.

If your child has an autism diagnosis in BC, you may have heard about BC Autism Funding — but navigating what it covers and how to use it can feel overwhelming on top of everything else you're already managing.

Here's what I want you to know:

BC Autism Funding is a provincial program that gives eligible families funding they can use to access services and supports of their choosing. The whole point is flexibility — to help families pursue what actually works for their child.

At DRW NeuroPerformance, we accept BC Autism Funding for both neurofeedback sessions and neurodiverse-affirming clinical counselling.

If you're curious about how your family's specific funding might apply — or just want to understand what's possible — the free consultation is exactly the right place to start.
