She fought rare disease with bravery and strength like none other. She battled Hirschsprungs, SCID, a Bone marrow transplant, SVC Syndrome and received her life saving bowel transplant Aug. 2023. Though she be but little, Bella was fierce! Bella also had CHH (a form of dwarfism.) She was an advocate for many; SickKids Hospital, Pattison Childrens, RMHC CAD & Global just to name a few. Our TikTok journey (@kylact) started in 2020 and flourished in to a platform that has helped us help others be brave. Bella passed away at SickKids Hospital in Toronto, (far from our home in Saskatchewan)
on July 14th 2024. Her strong brother Waylon, Lyle and myself aim to carry on her brave legacy forever more.

And with this let me say…

To my daughter Bella in Heaven, honey, because of you we are braver. Because of you & your fierce advocacy for organ donation, many lives have been saved & will continue to be, in your legacy.šŸ’–

Waylon-Sam, Bella’s donor hero… there will never be enough words to thank you for the precious, pain-free year you gave our girl. Your gift gave Bella more life, more memories, and more time. And it continues to give life to others. We’ll always think of you when we see windmills. šŸ’š Madison Loreli

And to David Foster Foundation , for the unforgettable memories, immense support & profound way you carry our Canadian transplant kiddos through the hardest times of their lives, thank you.šŸ’œ

There are moments that are simply too profound to put into words. šŸ’œ

So, I’ll let these moments speak for themselves. ✨

The David Foster Foundation’s 40th Anniversary Gala was an extraordinary celebration of life, generosity and the power of organ donation for the Canadian children (and their families) whose lives depend on it.

But what I will carry with me most deeply is hearing Bella’s name spoken, remembered and celebrated by so many extraordinary people. People of such incredible calibre, whose names I never imagined would one day be connected to hers.

To hear her remembered in a room filled with so much talent, generosity and influence was something I will never be able to fully put into words.

Thank you to everyone who made this unforgettable evening possible.

David Foster Foundation , thank you. For remembering Bella, saying her name and carrying her legacy forward. I will never be able to fully express what that means to my heart.ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

A girl needs her Miss Vickie's first, mmmk.

I promise more details of our time at the extraordinary David Foster Foundation 40th Anniversary are coming. But in the mean time I need to first bring a little giggle to you all, as I know 🪽Bella’s first order of business would have been to not only make a TikTok, but a funny one. And the fact that I got daddy to join too, would have made her the happiest.ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Also, what is it so easy for guys to just,
p**f, get a tux, and look absolutely smashing?😭 Lyle Thomson

From the moment your hospital life began and you taught this world bravery, I’ve had
ā€œShe will move mountainsā€
tattooed on my back.

Honey, you sure did.
And your legacy still does.

Not only did you move them,
you loved them. šŸ”ļø

And I’ll forever strive to be closer to them,
just for you, baby girl.🪽

Montana, thank you for all your beauty & adventure. thank you for this absolute perfect cover. And , I’ll see you this weekend, in support of the David Foster Foundation & kids needing organ transplants.

ā€œCheck on your friends in their second year of grieving their child… they’re un-numbing.ā€

That was one of the first things shared by our psychologist at my very first grieving mothers retreat, and I felt understood within the first hour & knew, this wknd would bring the relief I was seeking & hoping it would.

As I approach two years since my Bella died, the weight of that un-numbing has been heavy. Surrounded by other grieving mothers, I learned that honouring someone else’s grief does not diminish my own. I created a nature mandala with Bella at the centre, learned the meanings of what I chose for my envision board, cried, connected, & was reminded that tears are nature’s medicine.

One mom said something that I needed so much, that motherhood is like a book. Bella’s story is not over. Bella’s story has many chapters. Her legacy is still being written.

There is so much more I can’t fit into one post, so please ask me about anything below.

Many thanks to Jillian of Hazel’s Heroes & Alana of Carry You With Me for the love you put into this, year after year.

If I tagged you below, please share your supports, upcoming retreats & location in the comments. If you’re not tagged, please add yourself & share where we can find you. I’d love to find & share what I experienced this weekend for my husband, other grieving fathers, my son/grieving siblings, couples & fellow grieving mothers. I want to attend something like this, again. ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Come back.
Be here.
Come back.
Be here. šŸ’”

I’d give anything to hold you again, be silly with you, or receive one more of your sweet little texts.

Every morning, I go back to what it would be like to wake up with you at home. I replay the adorable way you’d hop out of bed, if you weren’t connected to your IVs or ostomy drainage. If Waylon wasn’t up yet, I’d see the top of your little blonde noggin boppin’ over to my side of the bed to say, ā€œGood morning, Mommy.ā€ And once he was awake, I’d hear you two giggling & plotting ways to prank Mommy and Daddy.

And even when you were hooked up to your IV, you’d somehow get that giant backpack of TPN off the pole and drag it along with you.

I miss our routine. My medical mom life… Seeing your medications in the cupboards, your outfit laid out for the next day, your ostomy supplies in the bathroom…

It all meant you were here.

I love supporting brands that are made so close to home.

I feel that sharing this, is needed, since there’s a hidden pressure I still feel. Anticipating questions like, ā€œWhere did you go?ā€ or ā€œIs everything okay?ā€ can feel more overwhelming than the silence itself… but theres another side I’m not sure many are aware of and if I don’t make note of it, I get worried that the advocacy work I carry on for my Bella, through these socials we built together, will get lost.

It’s hard to explain that while I have the most incredible online community, I also carry a fear that comes with stepping back. Not because of follower counts, but because I know how these social media systems work…and I know what I have built here is unique to it.

I know you all care deeply…I also know, the algorithms don’t. And I worry that in trying to take care of my mental health & grieving heart, by stepping back at times…there can also be a loss of awareness, advocacy, & support on the other side. And I never want that to happen. So much of what I do online is in honour of my late daughter, her legacy, & the communities I continue to advocate for, because of her.

Grief has also felt much heavier after recently speaking at a very special event.

Being in a room of hundreds, all of whom are grieving children. Then looking out at the room, seeing multiple balloons on every table representing the little ones who died… my heart can’t help but carry that too.

It’s no wonder I’ve needed to intentionally give myself some rest lately. Time to process not only my own grief, but the weight of standing in a room filled with it. To hold space for it all. And it weighs.

That kind of heaviness can feel debilitating, but I know I don’t carry it alone. Such a bittersweet part of grief is knowing that sometimes the only small ounce of relief you feel is because the person beside you, whose child also died, is helping you carry it.

Watching him carry this on for his sister, sending his love with each toy, knowing why the kiddo getting bloodwork might need it… breaks & mends my heart at the same time. šŸ’”ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Bella’s Basket is something Bella started years ago for our local hospital lab here in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. We fill it with toys & little gifts for kiddos who have to come in for bloodwork & pokes, the hard appointments Bella knew all too well.

Thank you will never feel big enough for everyone who has donated toys, sent gifts, supported Bella Brave merch, or helped us refill Bella’s Basket over the years. Every purchase from BellaBrave merch goes directly back into filling this basket for local kiddos. šŸ’ž

One of my biggest hopes is that someday we can expand Bella’s Basket into more hospitals & help even more children facing scary appointments.

And to the kiddos picking a toy from Bella’s Basket, we hope you feel some comfort, some love, and even a little sprinkle of brave.
