Did you know there’s money available to pay for your employees training?

There is a federal and provincial money available for companies to train. Much of our training could be covered by these grants. We have a guide that summarizes all of the programs available.

WHO THESE PROGRAMS ARE FOR:
These programs may be available to employers, unions, training trusts, construction and trades organizations, industry associations, and not-for-profits. Eligibility varies by program.

Many programs support leadership development, communication, Microsoft 365 / digital skills, onboarding, curriculum development, and other workforce initiatives. These are all courses that we provide.

We take training very seriously. Our facilitators are carefully selected and trained. We work hard to match the right teachers to the right customers.

Talk is cheap. Your culture is built on communication and behaviours that are aligned to the values you want to see lived out in the day to day. It’s little behaviours that stack every day, and most of that is free. It doesn’t cost you anything to build a great culture.

You have to be nice to people.
You have to ensure that your leaders are nice to people
That your supervisors are nice to people

Ask questions, learn about people, and understand what they want in their career.

Don’t give me any excuses.

Make time for what matters

I’m getting mixed messages. Young people are telling me that they’re trying to find jobs and no one will hire them, even with trade school experience. And companies are telling me that they need to hire people, but they’re not hiring these inexperienced people they’re only hiring experienced workers. Do we not realize that there’s people that wanna work and they just need some investment into them? And companies have been so burned so many times that they aren’t willing to take inexperienced young people on because they’re afraid that they’ll pour into them and then they’ll leave. We need to fix this problem.

Moms have a knack for spotting talent early. They invest in their kids. If you’re lucky to have a great mom, she pushed, supported, taught, and showed up.

Your mom may have been in steel-toed boots, or running a business, working a job or staying at home. She was modelling life for you without you realizing it.

Before anyone hired you, someone at home was already building your work ethic, your grit, and your belief that you were capable of something great. That someone was probably a mother or mother figure.

Today I’m grateful for my mother, for the skills she taught me and for every woman who has influenced my life and my work. You don’t always get the credit, but we see you.

Happy Mother’s Day. 💛

This morning I stood in Ottawa. Albert Dumont gave the best land acknowledgement and stories of workplace injury, workplace death and passing the “trowel” I’ve heard. It was very moving.

I was standing at this memorial with workers and leaders who know the weight of this day. There were moving stories shared about serious injuries and deaths on the job. I heard numbers from every province of all who were killed and injured in 2025.

Every year on April 28th, tradespeople stop and remember the workers who went to work and didn’t come home.

In the trades, we talk a lot about legacy. About what we leave behind.

The workers we remember today left something behind too. Their sacrifice is the reason we support safer job sites, better training, stronger leadership, and workplaces that actually protect the people in them.

Sean Strickland shared that we need to ensure:

- Strong supervision
- Personal responsibility
- Culture that puts people ahead of deadlines and budgets

William McLeod shared moving stories of injury and loss. And reminding us of the responsibility we have to ensure everyone goes home at the end of the day.

We owe them that. Mourn the dead. Fight for the living is the slogan.

Is there ever a time where training doesn’t work?

The answer is yes sometimes there are leadership or operational or structural problems that actually if you tried to throw training on top, it just becomes a Band-Aid or actually fall completely flat so we do whenever possible want to solve the operational leadership structural problems first before we try to build training on top of that
