This Fire Prevention Week, we’re celebrating Ed and the dedication he brings to keeping UHN safe every day.

As a Fire Marshal at UHN, Ed works with teams across the organization to help prevent emergencies and keep our hospitals safe for everyone who walks through our doors.

"Safety is the foundation of everything we do," says Ed.

Thank you to Ed and the entire Fire & Life Safety team at UHN for the important role they play in keeping patients, families and staff safe, informed and prepared.

Did you know oral hygiene is directly linked to your overall health, not just your teeth and gums? 🦷

This National Dental Hygiene Month, we’re recognizing dental hygienists and the role they play in helping patients protect and maintain their oral health across UHN.

As a Dental Hygienist at UHN’s Toronto Rehab, Dorothy helps patients maintain their oral hygiene through education and personalized care recommendations. She works closely with families and care teams to promote daily care practices, provide guidance, and ensure care plans are tailored to patients’ needs.

Heading to UHN? 🛑

Please allow extra travel time when visiting UHN sites on University Avenue including Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and Toronto Rehab – University Centre. The City of Toronto is conducting watermain and road work.

Northbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane on University Ave. from Armoury St. to College St. until early 2027. Additionally, from Wednesday, October 7 to Friday, October 16, 2026, eastbound traffic on College St. approaching University Ave. will also be reduced to a single lane.

While all UHN sites will remain accessible to vehicles and pedestrians, reduced traffic lanes may cause delays. Patients, families and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and consider subway travel to ensure they arrive on time for appointments and visits.

Housing is health care. 🏠

When UHN opened Dunn House, Canada’s first social medicine housing initiative, it proved this. When we prescribed housing as a part of care, patients experiencing homelessness and complex health challenges saw fewer emergency department visits and shorter hospital stays, showing how stable housing can transform lives.

Today, we’re proud to announce the next phase of social medicine housing with three new developments that will create nearly 200 additional supportive and transitional housing units for UHN patients.

Together with our partners at Build Canada Homes, City of Toronto, Createto and UHN Foundation, we’re expanding access to housing, improving health outcomes, and helping more people get the support they need.

As our population ages, the need for care that reflects the unique needs and goals of older adults continues to grow.

Today, on International Day of Older Persons, we recognize the contributions of older adults, the unique challenges they face, and the dedicated TeamUHN members working to improve care experiences and outcomes for this growing population. Through UHN's Older Adults Action Plan, teams across the organization are working to create more age-friendly spaces, support evidence-based care, and improve experiences for older adults and their caregivers.

At this year’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day ceremony, TeamUHN gathered at the Michener Gitigan to reflect on what reconciliation looks like.

The ceremony created an opportunity to hear and learn from Indigenous voices, reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonialism and consider our shared responsibility to advance reconciliation.

This work is also reflected in UHN’s approach to health care, from supporting traditional healing practices to increasing Indigenous representation and leadership and strengthening cultural safety.

On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we reflect on the enduring trauma caused by Canada’s former residential school system and honour Survivors, families, communities, and the children who never returned home.

This day calls us to listen, learn and continue the work of reconciliation. Guided by the Indigenous Health Program, UHN continues this work by advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action related to health.

Patient Partners bring their lived experiences and perspectives into work across UHN, helping us better understand the realities of patients and families navigating care.

Across projects, committees and improvement efforts, they challenge our assumptions and help us see what we might otherwise miss. Their contributions help shape policies, programs, services, and experiences as we continue to listen and learn.

Each year, we take an opportunity to recognize our Patient Partners, past and present, who have generously shared their time and wisdom with us. Thank you for helping us build a more responsive, compassionate, and accountable health system. 💙
