Did you know that acne is one of the most common skin conditions, affecting millions of adults and showing up in a variety of forms including whiteheads, blackheads, occasional breakouts and cystic acne?
Blemishes are caused when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Hormones, stress and other factors can also contribute.
Acne on the face and body may have common triggers, but body skin has its own challenges, including:
⨠Thicker skin
⨠More sweat, especially during workouts or warmer weather
⨠Clothing that can trap sweat and bacteria
⨠Friction, especially when combined with sweat
And yes, breakouts can still happen over 50! Hormonal changes can play a role, but our skin may also be drier, thinner and more sensitive than it once was.
So how do we treat breakouts without being too harsh on mature skin?
Keep cleansing gentle, avoid aggressive scrubs and choose non-comedogenic products. Ingredients like salicylic acid can help unclog pores, but introduce active ingredients gradually and make sure youâre also supporting your skin with a good moisturizer.
And donât forget daily sunscreen â especially when using exfoliating skincare ingredients.
If acne is persistent, painful, cystic or causing scarring, speak with a dermatologist or healthcare professional.
Over-50 skin can have breakouts AND need extra hydration at the same time. Itâs all about finding that balance. đ

There are so many skincare products out there, and they all promise amazing thingsâglowing skin, fewer lines, better texture, that beautiful âglass skinâ look. And thatâs not to say they donât deliver. But hereâs the thing Iâve learned: what works for one person may not work for someone else.
I recently used skincare from a company thatâs known for delivering that gorgeous, glowing glass-skin look. I actually really liked the products, and I loved that they are clean products. Unfortunately, my skin reactedâand definitely not in a good way.
It was a good reminder that even a highly rated product with great ingredients and thousands of glowing reviews isnât automatically going to be right for your skin.
Before jumping on the latest skincare trend, think about your own skin first. What does it need? Is it dry, oily, sensitive or reactive? What ingredients have worked for you in the past? Introduce new products gradually, patch test when you can, and give your skin time to tell you what it thinks.
And donât feel like you need a complicated 10-step routine just because everyone else seems to have one. Sometimes a few products that your skin genuinely loves are far better than a shelf full of whatever happens to be trending.
Skincare is personal. The best skincare isnât necessarily the one everyone is talking aboutâitâs the one that works for YOU.
