Cruise passenger isolating in B.C. has tested positive for hantavirus, top doctor says!
One of the four passengers from the hantavirus-striken cruise who has been isolating on Vancouver Island has tested positive for the virus, B.C.’s top doctor announced Saturday.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said the individual developed a headache and fever two days ago and was tested at a hospital in Victoria Friday evening, resulting in a “presumptive positive” test for the Andes strain from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control.
Results from the National Microbiology Lab in Winnipeg to confirm the case are expected to come over the weekend, she added.
“Clearly this is not what we hoped for, but it is what we planned for,” Henry told reporters at a news conference in Victoria.

Zero-emissions vehicle sales rise 75% in Canada, experts point to rising gas costs and rebates.
TORONTO -- A new Statistics Canada report has revealed that this past March, 21,574 new zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were sold across the country. That’s an eye-opening increase of 74.7 per cent year-over-year when compared to March of 2025.
New ZEVs made up 12.2 per cent of total new motor vehicles sold in Canada, compared with 6.5 per cent in March 2025. Auto industry insiders who spoke to CTV News believe the jolt to the electric vehicle market is being powered by multiple factors.
ZEVs include any motor vehicle that has the potential to produce no tailpipe emissions, such as battery-only vehicles and plug-in hybrids.
Fresh off attending an automotive conference in Halifax this week, Canadian Automobile Dealers Association spokesperson Huw Williams shares that many dealerships believe the surge in sales is a sign of things to come.

Alberta separation petition overturned as judge rules in favour of First Nations
A judge threw out an Alberta separatist petition Wednesday, ruling the province had a duty to consult with First Nations -- a decision quickly declared “anti-democratic” by Premier Danielle Smith.
Justice Shaina Leonard also said Alberta’s chief electoral officer should never have issued the referendum petition.
The premier promised an appeal.

Cyclist sues Vancouver Police Department after being hit by stolen cruiser
🚨 A Vancouver cyclist is suing the Vancouver Police Department after being seriously injured by a stolen police cruiser. According to reports, officers left the vehicle unattended while responding to another situation, and a suspect allegedly stole the cruiser before crashing into the cyclist.
The lawsuit claims the police acted negligently by failing to properly secure the vehicle, leading to life-changing injuries for the victim. The case has sparked major debate online about police accountability, public safety, and whether emergency responders should be held responsible when their equipment is misused.
Many people on social media argue that leaving a running police vehicle unsecured in public was reckless, while others say officers often have to make split-second decisions during emergencies. The lawsuit could become an important test of accountability and liability in Canada.
