Cooktops almost never crack from drops. They crack from two things you probably do every day without thinking: thermal shock and abrasive cleaning.

Here’s how to avoid both:

1. Skip the steel wool, scouring pads and powder cleaners — they leave micro-scratches that turn into cracks.
2. Let the surface cool down before you wipe it. A cold cloth on hot glass is exactly the shock that splits it.
3. Get a proper glass cooktop scraper (under $10) and hold it at a 45° angle.
4. Wipe spills while the glass is still warm — not scorching, not stone cold.

A cracked cooktop runs $400–$800 to replace. A scraper is $10. You do the math.

What I pulled out of dishwashers this month 👇

Cherry pits. Fruit stickers. Broken glass. Toothpicks. Even rice grains in clumps.

All of these jam the pump. The pump costs $200-$350. The 5 seconds you save by not scraping plates costs you $300.

Rule: scrape, don’t rinse. Modern dishwashers need a little soil to work — too clean and detergent foams. But chunks of food kill them.

Oven heating unevenly? Don’t replace it yet 👇

3 things to check before you call anyone:

1️⃣ Do both heating elements glow during preheat? If only one lights up — the other’s dead.
2️⃣ Does the convection fan spin when the oven’s on? Silent or stuck — the motor’s gone.
3️⃣ Is the door seal tight? The dollar bill test: close the door on a bill. If it slides out easily — the gasket’s gone.

Each of these is a $100–250 part with a 30-minute install. Way cheaper than a new oven ✅
If all three check out — it’s most likely the thermostat. And that’s a tech call.

Plates coming out dirty? Stop blaming the detergent 👇

90% of “bad dishwasher” complaints are clogged spray arms or filters. Both are user-cleanable. Both take 5 minutes.

Step 1: Twist the spray arm counter-clockwise, pull out, hold up to light. See blocked holes? Use a toothpick.

Step 2: Pull out the filter at the bottom (twist or lift). Rinse under hot water with a splash of white vinegar.

Do this once a month. Your dishwasher will clean better than the day you bought it.

If it still leaves residue — likely the heating element or pump. That’s a real service call.

🚨 Error code on your washer? Don’t panic — try this first!

Most error codes look scary, but 60% of them are simple fixes.

Error E03 (or F03 depending on the brand) means the machine can’t drain.

The fix? Clean the drain filter — it unscrews by hand at the bottom-front of the washer.

You’ll find coins, hair, sometimes a sock. Pull them out, screw the filter back, run a rinse cycle.

Things I found in washers this week alone 👇

Coins, bra wires, hair ties, Lego, screws — and one set of car keys. The bra wire is the №1 reason washers fail. It punches through the rubber, jams the pump, and you’re looking at a $300+ repair.
