The hairline is more than just hair. It is part of the structure of the face.

When we look at a face, we unconsciously divide it into key areas that help us understand its proportions and balance, from the chin, to the nose, the brow area, and finally the hairline.

When the hairline disappears, the upper part of the face can appear longer, changing the way the entire face is perceived.

That is why, at Nick SMP, one of the main goals with the hairline is to make it look not noticeable. A hairline should not stand out as SMP. It should blend naturally with the face.

Today, there is a pattern in many SMP hairlines that makes SMP easier to recognize. For that reason, every hairline should be unique to the person’s face, not copied from a standard design.

When designing a hairline, different factors should be taken into account:

-the natural proportions of the face

-the person’s age

-any remaining traces of the original hairline

and, if needed, older pictures from when the person still had a hairline

This helps create a result that feels personal, believable, and natural.

SMP is not only about creating the appearance of hair.
It can also help restore the upper frame of the face.

A natural SMP hairline should never look designed.
It should look like it belongs there.

The closer you look, the more the details matter.

This zoom-in shows exactly what I’m looking for when performing SMP: defined individual impressions, controlled size, clean edges, and no unnecessary spreading around the dots.

The goal is not to create one flat, dark shadow. Each impression is placed individually to recreate the appearance of shaved hair follicles and blend naturally with the client’s existing hair.

For this project, I started with a lighter black-and-brown mix and allowed one month between sessions to see the true healed tone before making any adjustments.

Up close, you can see the definition of the impressions, the consistency of the size, and how naturally the SMP integrates with the shaved hair.

Good SMP should still look good when you zoom in.

Finding the Right Hair Length with SMP

How long can you actually wear your hair after SMP?

For this test, my client let his hair grow for one full month without cutting it. The goal was to see how the SMP would blend with his natural hair at different lengths and find the best look for him.

SMP creates the appearance of shaved hair follicles on the scalp, so the right hair length depends on how much natural hair you still have and how evenly it is distributed.

As the hair gets longer, areas with more natural hair can start to look darker or fuller than areas where SMP is providing most of the visual density. Keeping the hair shorter reduces that contrast and allows the natural follicles and SMP impressions to blend more evenly.

We tested different lengths, including approximately 3 mm, 2 mm, and a double-zero trim.

For him, the double-zero trim was the winner. At this length, the transition between his natural hair and the SMP became much more balanced, and the overall result looked cleaner and more uniform.

This is also why I don't believe there is one perfect hair length for every SMP client. It depends on your existing hair, density, hair color, pattern of hair loss, and the final look you want to achieve.

Sometimes finding the right length is part of finding the best SMP result.

A hairline does more than replace the look of lost hair, it brings back the frame of the face.

This SMP transformation was designed to look subtle, natural, and completely blended with his features.

Sometimes, the smallest details make the biggest difference.

My goal is always to achieve the most realistic result by matching the areas where hair is still present. I carefully replicate the natural darkness, true black tones, hair size, and the soft shadow created by the hair beneath the subdermal layer of the skin, what I call Subdermal Hair Pigment, then blend that look naturally into the areas with no hair.

This is my approach, my plan, and my signature.
